In one of the most important cases of the social media age, free speech and national security collide at the Supreme Court on Friday in arguments over the fate of TikTok, a wildly popular digital platform that roughly half the people in the United States use for entertainment and information.

TikTok could shut down the social media site in the U.S. by Jan. 19 unless the Supreme Court strikes down or otherwise delays the effective date of a law aimed at forcing TikTok's sale by its Chinese parent company.

"Absent such relief, the Act will take effect on January 19, 2025," TikTok said in a Dec. 9 legal filing. "That would shut down TikTok—one of the Nation's most popular speech platforms — for its more than 170 million domestic monthly users on the eve of a presidential inauguration."

Working on a tight deadline, the justices also have before them a plea from President-elect Donald Trump, who has dropped his earlier support for a ban, to give him and his new administration time to reach a "political resolution" and avoid deciding the case. It's unclear if the court will take the Republican president-elect's views — a highly unusual attempt to influence a case — into account.

TikTok and China-based ByteDance, as well as content creators and users, argue the law is a dramatic violation of the Constitution's free speech guarantee.

TikTok won't disappear from Americans' phones on Jan. 19 if the law takes effect. However, users would not be able to update the app and those who don't already have it would not be able to download it.

LOL..they still can't help themselves. President's (and all politicians really) for the longest time have commented on Supreme Court cases or given their political views about matters before the Supreme Court

Forcing a foreign, communist nation to divest ownership and involvement in an app that collects mass data on Americans is not a violation of the 1st, IMO, or even close.

The platform can still exist, the communist Chinese government just can't have involvement or access to its data.

I hope it gets shut down. I could care less about people wasting time. I am worried about CCP data gathering.

Think about it like this:

They have said they would rather shut down in the US rather than sever ties with the CCP.

They would rather shut down in their most profitable market rather than cut off the CCP from data gathering. What does that tell you?

1. Download app now.
2. Keep phone after getting new one.
3. Wait til rich people flaunt their access to TikTok.
4. Sell used phone with app installed.
5. Profit.

People still don't understand the 1st amendment.

Lots of deserving people would lose a part of their income, but way more undeserving asshats would lose their's.

Either way, I knew it was data collection from the beginning and never downloaded it or let my family get it. Don't know why anyone would trust anything related to the Chinese government

Should the Chinese Government be able to own farmland in the United States?

While never really "centrist" (at least beginning in the 20th century), since 2015 the media had complete shed the thin veil that their duty was simply to report the news and has fully embraced a duty of pushing a narrative. At this point they don't even pretend to care that at least 1/2 of American citizens believe they have zero credibility. They just hope to be able to influence slightly more than 50% of the populace

China is an enemy of the US. However, they are second behind the main stream media whose sole mission is to create constant division among US citizens by doing everything possible to lead people into not believing their own eyes, ears, social interactions, and intuition. If you watch the 6:00 national news you would be convinced the US is a horrible place where all of its citizens hate one another in some fashion when, in reality, while people may have differing political views on issues they generally treat each other with basic respect on a day to day basis.

With saw this past election the MSM shocked to realize they are losing their grip on the stranglehold of being able to influence the populace with their preferred message. The reason is the prevalence of social media information outlets. The malleable bozos they can hire fresh out of college and pay $18 per hour with a singing bonuses of "moral superiority" to write this drivel are still trying their best to maintain the MSM's relevance. But that will soon go away with (1) the growing number of people who are comfortable getting their news from alternative sources becoming the majority as the baby boomers who keep the 6:00 news, CNN, etc afloat fade away, and (2) AI replacing the "journalists"

In addition to that, its widely used by illegal immigrants to find routes and ways into the US. If immigrants are using it, just think who else is using it, its openly being used by terrorists organizations as well.

No foreign entity should

Its long form economical attack on all fronts.

Gather data on the young population
Control the media of the young population
Own and control vast amounts of farm land
Own and control vast amounts of housing

Information, knowledge, food, housing

Trump changed his mind on the ban, once one of his tech buddies decided it was worth pushing forward with the idea that Tiktok can exist as long as it is sold to an American company.

Curious to see how this plays out, because selling out to an American company like Meta, is not really any fix the wide spread privacy issues.

We have no privacy on social media

The segregation would just mean that it wouldn't be shared with the CCP

I'm still not convinced that this could be achieved
