I am a teacher and agree with some of the bitching. However, some of it is relative. In poor schools, the job dynamics are hard. Where I was last year at an all-black school and low SES, to get my 8th Grade Science scores above the state average was treated like I was a miracle worker. I used that to get a job at one of the top schools now.

I find the ones who complain the most are the best ones because they are the ones who work the hardest are underpaid. The shitty ones never complain because they are babysitters and give the other half a poor name. This is unfortunate. Teaching can be a lifelong job for some and a stress-free one if you just don't care...because it's almost impossible to lose your job.

Once again, what teachers? I am a teacher. I have many friends who are teachers. I have many fb friends who are teachers.

The number of complaints I have heard: zero. In fact, I know more than a few who are excited to go back. I have training on Thursday to find out what is new with the curriculum, textbooks, and ....

I am looking forward to meeting new students and making a difference in somebody's life.

Now, tell me one profession that does not have the 10-15% that complain about whatever.

The OT is full of idiots who generalize anything and everything.

Good night.

Create an environment that they enjoy being a part of. If you can get them to like coming into your room then you have a shot with them. Set rules and proceedures but don't be a Dick about it. Be able to talk to kids, shoot the shite with them. (With the focus od being a positive influence and not their friend) Don't worry so much about the curriculum early on. Obviously you have to teach but the early part of the year should be about winning over the kid. The biggest thing is dont let it bother you when they don't give a crap. Never let them see you sweat.

What grade and subject are you teaching?

I think this is great advice, particularly if you are teaching high school. Having a good set of procedures and being consistent with what you do is key for classroom management. Remember that what you do at the beginning of the year will set a tone for the rest of the year.

Straddling the line where you are respected and have discipline but are still friendly and able to talk to them is key. You don't want to be their buddy, but you don't want them to hate coming to your class either. This can be easy or tough depending on your personality.

I think the big thing is just finding what works for you, every teacher has a different personality so what works for one great teacher at your school may not work for you.

Sorry but I laughed pretty hard at this. But it depends what grade you teach too.

Some teachers deserve to bitch and complain. Some don't.

I can't take the pay bitching. Get a different job then. My only gripe with teachers is this. Hell I don't have a degree but make really good money. But I put in the hard work. A degree doesn't mean you should make 6 figures.

With that said, if any teachers see this I need advice for classroom management on the first day/week of class. I have ZERO experience with this.

Last year was my first year teaching, and honestly what I found most helpful was all of the hours I was forced to observe other teachers for my MED. I observed about 40 hours with a fantastic teacher and learned a ton. The other 60 hours I observed a mixture of decent, beginner, and solid teachers and was able to see what worked and didn't work in their classes.

I would just try to pick other teachers brains at your school for help. Don't be afraid to ask them for ideas or strategies. All teachers have been there before, so we are usually willing to help each other out. Are their going to be other teachers at your school teaching the same subject? And are you going to have a mentor teacher there? Either will make it easier to ease yourself in.

As far as resources online go, I didn't really have any go to ones for starting the year, I would use the internet to search for activities and worksheets for individual lessons a bunch during the year though.

The big thing to start is just to concentrate on setting up good classroom management (and don't worry if yours is not great to start, nobody does) and procedures to start off with. Have a few simple rules that you install at the beginning from the first day, and come with a good attention getter procedure for when you are getting class attention (whether it's a countdown 3,2,1 or something else). If you have a Harry Wong book (the first days of school one the poster mentioned above me is good) he has many good strategies for this, though they can be tough to implement.

Mainly I'd just say to make sure you don't let things get to you too much if they are negative. You are going to have a certain number of students that just don't care and you'll never reach, concentrate on doing everything you can and celebrate the small victories. If you make a personal connection with students you can turn around students that you would never think you would get and surprise yourself.

I think the hardest thing as a teacher is you have to care but you can't let yourself care too much. If you care too much you'll burn out and be out of the profession, but you have to care enough to be a good teacher.

They probably haven't had sex in a long time, so they're cranky. They'll be fine soon.

Honestly, if I got 2 months off every year, I wouldn't be terribly excited about going back either.

Yep. Same here. Now they have to go back to working 50-60 hours a week and dealing with a bunch of dumbass kids. I just had a month off and after I definitely didn't want to go back to work.

Laugh if you want. It simply proves my point about idiots on the OT. I enjoy going to these sessions in advance because so much changes every year, especially since C.C. has become an issue.

No I just can't see stuff changing much if you teach a set grade or set course in high school.

Geometry doesn't change. Neither does American history. I don't get this. But the. I don't know what a CC means. I'm a dummy that monitors magnetic interference between oil wells so we don't collide

We are discussing the field of education. You do not understand what "C.C." means. Do you EVER watch the news, read the news, or listen to the news? I find it nearly impossible that an American citizen of at least 12 years of age and of average intelligence could fail to use the obvious context clues within the subject matter and comprehend the term. I also find it amusing that you think the curriculum, the textbooks, methods, and requirements remain the same each year.

No I don't. I spend probably 9-10 hours a day either in meetings, on the phone, or planning scenarios for future wells. Couple in being on call 2 weeks a month (that means gettin up at any time to answer questions or discuss ways to optimize drilling) when I have 5 mins off I do something that allows me to forget the outside world. Wether it's working out, hanging with the gf, or just sitting on my porch watching the wildlife. I don't even watch tv if it's not lsu, saints or maybe a few tv shows. I get my news from here.

What is CC?

I think you are getting a little bent out of shape at my opinion. I agree it's a real job but doesn't deserve more pay. It's too structured and doesn't require enough extra time like my job has or a lot of other jobs that pay better. You know the pay going in so don't complain about that part. All I'm saying

Your comprehension is lacking. There is no negative/vengful/hateful connotation in my statement that would suggest your assertion that I am "getting bent out of shape." Once again, you supply more ignorant generalizations about a profession you do not seem to understand. You just told me that I knew about the pay and I should not complain. When did I complain about anything at all? And you claim that the hours are not demanding. Well, I agree that teaching may not be an 80-100 hour a week job, but I, and many other teachers, spend 60-65 hours a week working during the school year. I am not going to break it down for you because I have done that more than a few times over the past few years. Use the search button.

You is a generalization for teachers. I don't know you personally. So you are getting upset. It's ok. This is a place to vent.

I hear more complaints from teachers that they are under payed. But they chose to do the job. They can do something else

Btw my sister has taught for 5 years now. And in some crappy areas of north BR. I know what she goes through. She never complains about any aspects of her job though. Hell her first year she got bit by a kid.
