I saw the Wong book today, but opted for this one instead.

I read that Wong's book was a bit more scattered and spoke a lot about elementary school. I will be teaching high school.

Thank you all for the suggestions

You have no idea what it takes to be a good teacher. You'd suck at it

Don't tell them this is your first year. Seriously, don't. Lie instead.

I just wanted to say that I will start my teaching career this fall.
Remember that, if you stay in that profession long enough, students you teach today- as kids- will ONE DAY (and sooner than you think) look you in the eye as an adult. They may be a health care provider, physical therapist, school board member, etc. Make sure you treat them fairly and discipline with dignity.

Do that and the other end of your career/life will be very rewarding when you run across former students and they tell you how you much influence you actually had in their lives.

Also, I have a tattoo on the inside of my forearm. Would it be best to cover that up for teacher orientation? What should I wear for orientation anyway?

I can relate to this as I remember my former teachers.

If I must, I can tell them that I've taught at the college level, which isn't entirely false

You take a little here and there and incorporate it into YOUR personality/style. You can't be someone else but many of those things are critical if you're going to be successful. If you make it 3 years you're chances of remaining increase exponentially.

Absolutely cover it. If you see other teachers exposing ink after a few days, I wouldn't hesitate to do the same. But play it safe at first, as every school is different. I'd also wear slacks (albeit a comfortable pair) and a button down on my first day and have a tie handy just in case. It's more than likely overkill, but it's so much better to be overdressed than underdressed.

Don't lie to them. That's no way to start a teacher-student relationship. Cides, it's a small world. One of them will out you.

Create an environment that they enjoy being a part of. If you can get them to like coming into your room then you have a shot with them. Set rules and proceedures but don't be a Dick about it. Be able to talk to kids, shoot the shite with them. (With the focus od being a positive influence and not their friend) Don't worry so much about the curriculum early on. Obviously you have to teach but the early part of the year should be about winning over the kid. The biggest thing is dont let it bother you when they don't give a crap. Never let them see you sweat.

What grade and subject are you teaching?

Profound.

That's like saying you can always pick out the LSU/Alabama posters on a thread about Bama.
