The states transportation fund is low. Blames fuel efficient cars

Complete shocker coming from the state that does so well with the tax money it collects from having the second highest sales tax in the nation and manages that so efficiently

I am sure they will say it's time for all you hybrid and electric car drivers to pay your fair share. Get ready for a mileage tax.

According to the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s office, there isn’t enough money in the state’s transportation trust fund to meet statewide infrastructure necessities.
Among the reasons, fuel tax rates haven’t increased since 1990, which is the trust fund’s largest source of revenue. Another reason, the average fuel efficiency of passenger cars in the United States has increased, which has decreased the amount of revenue going into the fund.
Auditors also found from 2015 through 2021, $309.6 million dollars in TTF funds were used to supplement the voter-approved Transportation Infrastructure Model for Economic Development program along with a variety of local projects, which further reduced the amount of revenue for state transportation needs.
Within the next decade, the auditor’s office also estimates there will be an increase in automobile fuel efficiency and external electric charging vehicles, which could result in $563.6 million dollars less in motor fuel tax revenue.
Act 578 of the 2022 Regular Legislative Session will allow the state to collect a road usage fee for these types of vehicles. The auditor’s office reports, even if the fee is collected, as required, the revenue is projected to offset the impact of external electric charging vehicles on motor fuel tax collections and not that of more fuel-efficient vehicles. As a result, the state could still lose $322.9 million dollars starting in 2023 to 2032.

I mean, they should
They use the road same as the rest of us
Unless there is an EV interstate made of unicorn farts that I am not aware of

There is zero incentive in the state of Louisiana to do anything positive.
Posted on 9/7/22 at 7:50 am to stout
This couldn’t possibly mean they need to budget better. Obviously the only solution is more taxes

Well the fair share that EV drivers will pay will still be mismanaged.
I’m so sick of these asshats but not much I can do about it. I used to think my vote could help. Alas …

Taxing EVs is understandable for road usage. But just because my Prius grocery getter gets better mileage than the baw edition F-250, doesn't mean I should have to pay more to equal it out. Louisiana will find a way to rape your butthole at every turn.

I don't use the schools due to not having kids. Can I get a property tax break?
That being said, I don't 100% disagree with what you are saying but the problem is they are blaming all fuel-efficient cars so they will not stop a mileage tax at electric vehicles.

We have a Prius and an F250 so by that standard we balance out.

What’s up with this little gem right here? “Voter approved”?
WTF is Transportation Infrastructure MODEL for Economic Development? This sounds like progressive gobbledy-speak for wasted money to buy off the black caucus. Especially this part: “along with a variety of local projects.”

I just paid 40.00 to change my address at the DMV Express
The state needs to cut bullshite jobs to fill budget holes

I also have a Ford ranger for work, but I guess that doesn't quite equal things out.

There is only one solution...move.

I bet the assholes in charge don’t have low salary issues. Sick of the constant corruption in every area of life and our pockets.

It is probably due to them charging fines, fees and taxes then allocating those dollars to some dumbass stuff that is completely unrelated.
Like if you are caught littering the fine money doesn't go to cleaning up the State's litter problem. It goes to State Retirement Fund.

Gotta start taxing EV’s. Figure out how.
They use the road too.

Any time anyone tries to do anything positive people biatch so much the project gets killed.
I'll say it again. Mayor Holden wanted a loop, but the citizens complained so much that the elected officials, especially the neighboring mayors, backed out and the project failed.
It's the biatching, whining and negative attitude that ruins everything.
There is no sense of community.

frick them, they complain daily about the profits of the big oil companies who make a big 5-6 cents profit during boom times, 3-4 cents during down times on each gallon of gas......meanwhile the state makes 20 cents per gallon for fricking doing nothing.
frick them....any government employee who complains about lack of funds when it comes to anything related to the gas tax can eat a fricking fat dick!!!!
that mindset is whats wrong with government!!
