Bar Pilots as they are known, who operate from the mouth of the river to Pilottown

How difficult can it be to navigate a wide, dredged, well marked river channel?

Cut the salaries in half and qualified master mariners will be lined up down the block for these jobs.

Was he ex-Navy and sued to get in? Because he used to live down the street from me way back when before he moved to English Turn if so.

Pretty damn tough. You ever steered a boat with 20,000 tonnes of cargo on it?

The Crew still operates the vessel. The pilot is there to help navigate.

We love us some random commissions/committees down here in Louisiana, don't we?

Right, well if the pilot fricks up it's on him.

The pilot from the 96 Riverwalk accident was hailed a hero.

Point being, these pilots make that much money because the property damage and environmental impact of an accident is 100x greater than the cost of their annual salary.

I've "steered" heavy navy and commercial ships during builders sea trials so yea, have a pretty good idea how they react to prevailing wind and currents.

I've had some business dealings with the rivers pilot association and it wasn't pleasant. Most entitled bunch of low lifes I've ever met.

And yet nuclear plant operators make significantly less.

, at least they are (over)paid experts in what they do. Compare that with the politicians who literally do nothing

2 wrongs don't make a right.

They aren't just shaking down the chemical industry they are shaking down people who buy chemical products (everyone).

Commercial airline pilots make a fraction of what the pilots get as well.

Grew up with a river pilot's son.

They made bank. They were some Gonzales "type" people, if you know what I mean, but they had crazy amounts of land, and toys over flowing out of their 4 car garage.

Sweet, you think you could wheel in a 735 ft ship with 70,000 tonnes of cargo into a port you've never been into?

Maybe we should give every swinging dick the opportunity to give it a go? What's the worst that could happen?

In the eyes of the corporations, 20,000 tons of chemicals or fuel is a lot more valuable than 300 people.

They are overpaid, but don't for a second think they care more about human life than a massive quantity of their product.

NO.... not him....but we have a few mutual friends. He's a good dude and truthfully deserves to be in...... the one i am referring to was birthed in... and from what I understand had a period where he could not pilot a vessel(for whatever reason) - but there are concessions in their deal that allow a couple like that to stay "on"... but I am not certain on that..... Pretty sure we are talking about the same guy - grew up around edna karr - his brother or his cousin is a plankowner from a certain revered Navy unit.... again good folks...

I know three pilots, 2 in one association and 1 in another. They make prob 500K a year, now they are self-employed. whatever it is they clear after taxes (let's say it's 300K) that's how much they spend a year. They have absolutely no material savings outside of the cash in their checking account.

Now, the pilots also get a pretty nice pension as well, so I guess saving money for retirement isn't really a thing to be worried about.

And as far as shaking down the state... sure... but these types of pilots everywhere make at least 350K a year, and many times, much more. They are all state-licensed with limits on the number of licenses. In other states, it might be more of an open process as to who to allow in.

Drama queen much?
Yeah, I think it should be opened up to be a more competitive job. As it is, you are either born into it or have some serious connections is the only way one gets the job. State Sen. John Hainkle's son just magically got in.

It's a pure union/mafia style of doing business and yes they are overpaid as a result.
