Sweet, you think you could wheel in a 735 ft ship with 70,000 tonnes of cargo into a port you've never been into?

Can’t be any harder than paddling my yak up river.

And for half that salary im sure we could get someone able to dock an aircraft carrier in a boat slip.

I think its hillarious that we have a government sanctioned mafia here.

Holy shite that's some out in the open corruption. Would love to know how much money they give to politicians every year.

It's the literal economic definition of a cartel.

Point being, these pilots make that much money because the property damage and environmental impact of an accident is 100x greater than the cost of their annual salary.

you think they would have to pay out of pocket for any damage they cause?

What's more, some pilots claim nepotism makes the river a safer place, with fathers more willing to share vital information about traffic and river conditions with sons and sons-in-law than with outsiders less loyal to the organization. Pilots say that's an important issue, considering the dangers posed by the hazardous cargo found on the oceangoing ships they guide each day on the Mississippi River.

They're not wrong. It is dangerous and sharing information helps.

Let's ask the dozen or so non related pilots if they're happy about getting a wage increase from their nepotic, non-info sharing organization.

They make prob 500K a year, now they are self-employed. whatever it is they clear after taxes (let's say it's 300K) that's how much they spend a year. They have absolutely no material savings outside of the cash in their checking account.

The pilot from the 96 Riverwalk accident was hailed a hero.

He ran into a massive occupied building, and was considered a hero? And he makes half a mill a year? What a life

So do you work for your $500k/year or are you one of the guys with a no-show job?

Yea thats a hillarious argument.

I design and test propulsion systems for the vessels they are clicking the buttons on and my frickup could override anybodys knowledge of anything and put a 450' atb through the side of the new bridge at full ahead. Wheres my half mil/yr salary?

And I'm guessing you also sent a message to thatmakesense to shut the hell up? You've been noticeably silent to some of the things that SFP posted last page. Comment?

Maybe he is currently wooing a daughter of a river pilot.

one of the pilots I know well - has a sister that was my age - I was friends with her growing up from jr high through college.....

NO AMOUNT OF MONEY WOULD HAVE MADE BEING MARRIED to her - even for a short time worth it... heck dating her was even out of the question.... there are simply more important things in life....

But they admit that that don't share equally with everyone. How can you avoid commenting on that?

Stay on the river buddy, you make a horrible politician.

It is dangerous

i agree. i don't think pilots should be making min wage or anything. they should be highly paid

it's just that the market should be open based on qualifications and not nepotism. that ensures that this dangerous job is handled by the most qualified persons

and sharing information helps

their duty is to share this information with all their apprentices/hands. they are brazenly claiming they would withhold this information from non-relatives because...no real explanation other than "family" (which is bullshite)
