Why would anybody ever go to school to have a "chance" at getting a job that's based solely on being related to someone.
While the overwhelming share of pilots are relatives, if the larger share of applicants are relatives, its logical that the new appointees will be relatives.
How many applicants are there each go round?
If you have 50 starburts in a container, 45 red and 5 orange and you need to pick 40, chances are you'll pick quite a few red ones.
Not applying for a job, because you think you won't get it is definitely how to get hired.

I know, that's why I was asking you

Never know unless you apply. It's not solely based on that.
It's not a pilot job or nothing to most people. You leave maritime school with a big license and a good degree

The pilots train the apprentices If a pilot is in an accident and at fault, they can be disciplined and fired. You don't just hop off the ship and leave the captain with the mess. Well, you are pretty much drug tested on the spot.
What I meant was more on the lines of who si responsible it a training pilot has an accident while being taught by a pilot? I would imagine docking a ship is a job you have to learn by doing not just watching.

The standard for pointing out blatant nepotism on the OT now is whether or not you'd take the case to court.
I thought I recalled there being a US Coast Guard investigation and a grand jury concerning all this fairly recently. What ever happened with that? Still on-going?

Uh, at least 35. Can I be a river pilot now? Do we get Starburst?

They're tropical, though.

Yea it's on the job training for the most part. The pilot supercedes the apprentice to my knowledge if an accident were to happen. He is the state licensed pilot

Please note my edit. I don't want future generations thinking I'm okay with yellow starburst.

Yes, I'm sure that's what future Generations will take from your comment.
Uh, you got lunch plans?

Correct, but most pilots are independent of the actual ship.

Fault is assessed on a percentage basis in every maritime accident. The pilot, apprentice, captain, helmsman, AB on bow watch, big shooter fast asleep in his bunk will all be assessed part of the blame

FWIW you can't just become a river pilot because your dad or uncle is one, it takes around 10 years to become a river pilot. It requires a 4 year degree from a approved maritime academy, Texas A&M has one of the few, during that time you must also obtain the required Coast Guard licenses, and a ton of other certifications. Then you must be selected for and complete a minimum one year apprentice program, after that you can be selected for the deputy pilot program which lasts a minimum of 4 years. While 500K is a ton of money go watch some youtube videos of river pilots boarding a ship in high seas, I wouldn't do it for any amount of money.

And nobody supersedes the captain. Just because he relinquishes the conn of the vessel to a state pilot does not relieve the captain of his responsibilities as master of the vessel

Cant wait till the SJW make the Association hire female, lesbian, gay etc. pilots.
