We rescued some ditch puppies when I was about 10. I had one of them until he got hit on the road when I was 16. Cried for a week and never had a dog since.

Just read it, so sad.
I had a dog die of HGE, the vet thought it was parvo, so they started parvo treatment. Then realized it was the even worse HGE and told me he wouldn't make it. I went and talked to my dog. He tried to stand and couldn't.
I said try one more day and if condition is worse I'll put him down.
He died thirty minutes after I left.
The dog I got after him, is about to turn eleven.
So I know a even sadder day isn't far away.
