My wife gave an 8 pound tip today at a pub near Nottingham. The waitress was a young girl, and she ran after her thinking she left the money behind. It was about 20%. Over here they either don’t tip, or they give a token amount - maybe 5%.

I tipped my uber driver 50 pounds tonight. He took me from Nottingham to London Heathrow - that’s a two hour drive. Good kid. Pakistani who has been in the UK a year. We stopped on the way to get coffee and he insisted on paying. He’s either a very genuine kid or he played me.

People on the board complain about freeloaders and bums. People should get jobs. So, some people get jobs working in the service industry, which doesn’t pay much. They rely, at least in part, on tips. But, they are trying to make an honest buck. People on the board say “screw them. I’m not tipping.” One poster writes that they should just be paid more, so no need for tipping. Guarantee it, people on the board say no increase in minimum wage.
If somebody has a job, they are working in a low wage job, but trying to make an honest go of it, I’m happy to give them a tip.

Obviously I tip at restaurants and on take out orders. I do not tip anywhere the employees are not depended on tips. Izzos. Nope. Subway. Nope. This list goes on.
Just because they have a program that allows them to give the customer an option to give a tip doesn't mean you have to give them one. There is no pressure at all.

You are the equivalent of those handing money to beggars out the car window.
This is about the sum of it right here.

Went out to eat today and was a bit taken back at the automated tip suggestions at the bottom of the check. Options were 18%, 20%, and 50%. I should have taken a picture of it as we were all surprised. Needless to say, the waitress did not earn a 50% gratuity.

I’ve decided to quit tipping until everyone is paid a decent wage

No mother fricker, we are not. I tip for good service and hot women, on the rare occasion, both.
I don’t give shite to panhandlers.

The worst part to me is the nonchalant “it’s just going to ask you a question” prompt from the worker. You ain’t fooling anybody bro. The workers themselves feel guilty about asking for the tip and the entire thing operates on you feeling guilty enough to do it

Stop tipping independent contractors.
It is their responsibility to charge an appropriate amount.
Went to a food truck yesterday. 3 people own and fully operate the truck. In the course of conversation while food was getting ready, I asked how much it costs for them to set up at this location. Told me it cost them nothing. The other business loved the crossover customers.
So why am I tipping them when they get to keep all the money and don't have to pay out anyone?

Not wrong, but is it too much to ask to have a social standard where you aren’t subjected to guilt tripping bullshite begging every time you try to engage with the larger economy? The impulse that leads to guilt tipping is a fundamentally GOOD selflessness that society needs, but which is exploited by shameless selfish pricks whose entire mantra is “frick you got mine.” Blaming the impulse is logically correct in this instance but takes the wrong lesson away.

I went somewhere and had to actually go to a different screen for the no tip button. The screen that came up had 4 tip options and a button to next screen that had 3 more and the no tip button.
