Yep, we all know the WSJ (which you can't read without a description) is in the business of click bait.

I did, just not on the trashy blue collar side.

Funny thing about this article is that none of the examples they give are roughneck jobs. A few are oilfield services jobs that are often filled by degreed engineers, though.

There’s nothing earth shattering here. The change in employment levels is affected by improving technology, sure. But the bigger culprit is the fact that years of high prices made the oil companies inefficient due to complacency. In many cases they have just trimmed the fat that they should have trimmed 10 years ago.

Wait, I am confused here. Am I supposed to wish for $4 gas so oilfield baws can brag about spending oilfield cash or am I allowed to be happy gas is under $3 a gallon? I can’t keep up.

This isn’t something new. It’s been around for more than 15 years. I manage my company’s Remote Operating Center which is located at my office.

I think when you get into this field, you know how crazy of a ride it can be,

But people see that $$$ and it blinds them

The $$$ should be a draw to set a lot of people who pass on college for the opportunity to set themselves up very well if they would pay cash for their toys and buy property and land, yet they finance everything for 72 months and have to dump it when the field dries up.

while accurate for some in this field, you do realize its not unique to "baws" in this industry? Good Lord, financial irresponsibility or poor financial management is widespread among all industries, sexes, ethnicities, etc.

Correct, but mostly in markets less volatile than the oilfield hand job pool. When the price drops $/barrel every corner lot in the south is full of trucks, boats and side by sides with "For Sale" signs on them.
