Well to be fair, there is no new tax. You've just been evading use tax which has been on the books just as long as sales tax.

Can’t a state choose not to tax? Thus making itself attractive to the amazons of the world? In essence become a hub for many vendors and companies? It would have to be a state that is HURTING like a West Virginia, but????

The tax loophole was IF the online retailer didn't have a physical presence in the customer's state (ie. brick and mortar store, warehouse, distribution center, etc). When sales tax is charged, its charged based on the local sales tax for the shipping address is located in.

So I'm not following your logic. How would a state become a hub for online vendors by not charging sales tax? The vendor would still be required to collect local sales tax for the other 49 states they ship to. Meanwhile, the tax exempting state would be giving away their own potential revenue while hurting their own local brick and mortar stores that are at a competitive disadvantage because they still have to charge sales tax.

Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street,
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat.
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat,
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet.

Don't ask me what I want it for
If you don't want to pay some more
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

And you're working for no one but me.

State governments are fleecing their residents. Why doesnt government cut its own fat? They always throw out bleeding heart threats about cutting health and human services but never cuts to State Police or Dept. of Administrations, Attorney General, SOS, Economic Development, Dept. of Insurance etc...

Im sure if you start going through these departments there would probably be a good billion dollars worth of fat to cut off the bone. Hell, you could probably cut a good 100 lawyers off of retainer in just one of those departments. We need an audit of every single department and show where every single dollar goes.

There are software / online services (not cheap) that will help with the calculation of sales tax depending on delivery address. This will be a minor blip to large businesses, and large platforms (like etsy)

This will hurt the smaller businesses who rely on online sales. This is going to be a compliance nightmare.

This is not "Additional taxes" These are taxes you should have been paying all along but you're cheating the state out of fair and legal sales taxes already on the books.

This bill only enforces the existing laws by putting the burden on the merchants to collect taxes because you retards can not be trusted to follow the law.

Agreed, but it's an administrative nightmare, and by not cheap I think you mean expensive as hell.

The assumption people are making is that the sales tax is based on the state from which the item is sold. Obviously it doesn’t work that way but it is counter intuitive to most. Allowing states to collect sales taxes on things their residents buy even if not bought there is kind of a weird concept. If I drive to MS and buy a case of beer I don’t pay LA sales taxes on it.

The laugh of it all is that governments believe their failure is because they don’t collect enough of your money.

Something to do with where the product is delivered. Years ago when I worked retail, if we were delivering or installing the job and the customer lived out-of-parish then we had to charge the sales tax based on the local rate where the job site was located. Even though they came in to order and pay for everything in-person in Jefferson Parish, if they lived in Orleans Parish we had to charge Orleans tax rate (except cash-and-carry sales were taxed at local JP rate where store was at).

Gosh, fin, you’re so rich. We almost forgot about your lavish lifestyle full of life's finest things. I’m glad you remind us constantly. Should we bow in your presence?

Most of the major online retailers already charge sales tax.

It’s not hard.

I may be mistaken though. Lol

My thought was wherever the business address was shipped from (physical presence or warehouse) was what put people on the hook for sales tax.
