I've been going to my gym long enough to see the progress others make.
There are people who, 3 years ago when I first joined, were fat, and are still fat today.
The gym is a great place to be if you are fat, but weight loss occurs in the kitchen. You can't outwork a bad diet.
I had a convo with one fat arse in the locker room a few weeks ago who asked me what I was getting ready to go eat as I had just finished my workout. I said probably something boring like a chicken salad and he made fun of my food choice and said he rewards himself after a workout by going out and getting a double meat double cheese burger and fries.
It's not hard to get fat, I just did an Ironman Triathlon back in April and trained for months, and even I had to watch what I ate to ensure any weight I did gain was controlled(I wanted to build my legs for the bike) and had to carefully count calories. If I had to restrain myself training for an Ironman, then people who don't watch their diet and practice a typical sedentary lifestyle or lifestyle that has the average workouts doesn't stand a chance.

Personally, I think the move from stay at home moms to the working woman played the biggest role in terms of quality of diet for the average American

People lack self control.
During the height of my Ironman training I was burning 28,000+ calories per week meaning I had to eat 4,000 a day just to maintain. I was really worried that post-Ironman I would be "used" to eating so much and would be miserable cutting back to a more normal fitness routine where I wasn't eating as much calories. It hasn't been quite as bad as I was expecting but it has been an adjustment and has required self control. I've learned the real challenge isn't the desire to eat 4,000 calories a day, but being able to eat 4,000 calories a day simply gave you more options so not having as many options is where the pain point is.
And 4,000 calories isn't that much. I would eat to match the workout for the day(so if I had a long weekend workout that burned 8,000 calories, I'd eat 8,000, and on rest days where I only burned 2300, I'd only eat 2300). I could easily knock out the 8,000 calorie days and not be full. And I learned how little 3,500 calories actually is. Throughout my entire 6 months of training I averaged 3,538 calories burned per day and averaged 3,494 calories consumed per day.
Combine sugary soft drinks, coffees, and "healthy" snacks like nuts and granola that are loaded with calories, to go along with their 3 meals a day, the average person could easily eat 3,500+ calories a day and get fat because they aren't burning anywhere near that much. 3,500 burned a day was my 24 week average training for a damn Ironman! The average person burns far less than that.
That's why most people are fat.

TLDR, during 6 months of Ironman training the average daily calorie burn according to my Garmin was about 3,500.
3,500 calories isn't that much food in the grand scheme of things. I could see how the average person could easily go over that every day - but the average person also doesn't spend 6 months training for a full Ironman, so its easy to get fat quickly.

Same way - the only thing I do is limit my consumption of sugar to almost nothing. I'll drink a 12 oz soda mb 2-4 times a year. That's pretty much it. I drink beer all the time, cook for myself at home most days and otherwise eat pretty much whatever I want.
I've said this before and it's the truth - if I had a good financial reason to bulk up I might do it - but the NFL ain't taking my old arse on at linebacker at this point so I'm more concerned about my long-term health and longevity.

I told you go read what Dr Layne Norton has posted on the issue. Go read what Alan argon has said on the issue. Both have literally posted dozens of studies and meta analysis showing what I have said is true.

I find it’s not that easy to eat 3-3.k calories and keep it clean/healthy
