This sounds like exactly the opposite of what you described.

If your job is eating up that much time and is constantly on your mind, it’s time for a different job IMO. I’ve had offers for much more money than I what I make now but my current situation allows me a ton of time at home with my family and I value my time over the money.

Still too much.

4 day work week for sure though. Weekends are too short.

I'd say most weeks I do maybe 15 hours of actual meaningful work.

And if you went to your boss and proposed a set up where you busted your arse for 20 hours a week (so a 33% increase in productivity) and had off the other 20+ hours on a normal week they'd probably think you lost your mind. It's crazy.

I'm 31 and in the same scenario.

The way I see it, I'll go hard as I can until I'm around 40, then I'll hopefully have enough experience and a solid enough resume to choose a less stressful path without giving up too much money.

At least that's my goal.

Yeah most Fridays I'm done before noon. I also start around 5 though on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Some great quotes inthat film

God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables, slaves with white collars, advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shite we don't need. We're the middle children of the history man, no purpose or place, we have no Great war, no Great depression, our great war is a spiritual war, our great depression is our lives, we've been all raised by television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires and movie gods and rock stars, but we won't and we're slowly learning that fact. and we're very very pissed off.”

How does one not know that this is what it will probably be like?

You could use some of my extra time, I sat around most of the weekend and did what I want. Friends and pets recharge my batteries. If I meet a cool enough chick to marry we are going to travel..no kids.

I think part of it is that humanity is having to adapt to being pulled in more directions than ever. However, your job expectations may be the tipping point combined with everything else.

I've had stretches of six months or so when the job had me working so much that I felt like I could never quite 'catch my breath'. Fortunately, that hasn't happened in a while. Find a way to manage the job and the rest should fall into place.

Yeah, we're closed on Fridays in the summer and the three day weekend every week is nice. I also notice I'm a much happier person in the summer, but some of that happiness derives from my kids being home more and not as active with school activities. It's wonderful to be able to text one of them on Tuesday if something needs to be done at the house, and my daughter has recently gotten an interest in cooking and will occassionally have a meal ready for us soon after we get home. Summer is really the only time we have dinner as a family during the week, which is sad.

I agree, but I just don't think we're getting anything less than 30 any time in the foreseeable future.

Next week I'm slammed with shite so I'll be putting in serious hours. This week it's practically nothing so most of my day is spent searching for shite to fill my time and internet surfing. But I can't go to my boss and just say "Hey I'm not coming in this week, and I'm not taking any vacation to do so"

Because they spend to much on worthless crap and don't save.

You're free when you're not totally dependent on your circumstances to maintain a lifestyle. If you're having to bust arse for a lifestyle, you might want to re-assess it.

"We buy things we don't need, with money we don't have, to impress people we don't like"

That quote from that movie really woke me up to how stupid I was being with my own money and how I was living to impress other people.

How old are you? I’m in my 40s, and i can assure you that there have been times in my career when I’ve been out of work, because a company shut it’s doors, or i was miserable and quit, or whatever... If I hadn’t had savings to get me through the lean months, it would have been ugly.

Save. Your. Money.
