Welders in South Louisiana are going to make a lot more than most of the country. Welding a turnover at DOW is going to pay a hell of a lot more than your average fab shop in Toledo/Boise/Amarillo.
Braxton will be fine.

I mean, I'm sure you can make a good living if you work a bunch of OT. But is that really living?
fuk no. Working 80hrs a week isn't living, its merely existing. Despite what you hear on this site and the memes on FB, the trades are hot, tiring, meager paying jobs unless you become an exception.

Not back breaking, but I could never do that in the heat. Fck that.
Agree with the other poster about turnaround and project welders. $38 to $42 an hour and $100 to $115 a day per diem. Per diem is not taxed
Some get OT at double rates.

For anyone doing the math, that means the poverty line is 25k and they are 1.65 times higher than that.

Probably not counting that sick per diem

Walk into any supply house and observe the people that come in. Report back on how someone in their late 40's looks like a 60yo with bad knees and the need to continue working until they just physically can't anymore.

Did you just compare cashier pay to a welder?
Posted on 9/13/19 at 4:40 pm to Big_Sur
You have to own a welding business to make bank. One of my good friends in PA does. Started it with his late father. Has government and oilfield contracts. All from a tiny farm in western PA. Services up to 500 miles or some shite

One of my buddies is a hiring manager for a VERY large contractor and he told me their ceiling for welders is $18 an hour. That he had a guy come in that had 25 years of experience and had retired from a paper mill but was just wanting some part time work. When he offered him $18 an hour the guy laughed at him and said thanks but no thanks.
I don’t know what he expected. He was certainly in a union at the mill and there’s no way he’d come anywhere close to that with a contractor that basically pays slave wages.

The welders at my company make between $70,000 to $100,000 a year depending on experience and whether they work in shop or the field.

Gotcha
Welders can also transition to QA inspectors, field managers, planners, and safety person, etc within their company
