I have a coworker from SD. He says the overall expanse and flat emptiness of where he was born gave his wife claustrophobia as she had never been from an unpopulated area before.

Something I just googled is that may not be accurate either.

Satan's Storm in Koppel, Texas
The hot winds increased to 70 mph.

But on June 15, 1960, residents of the tiny town of Kopperl, Texas experienced a heatwave the likes of which they'd never dreamed. Residents awoke thinking their house was on fire due to the overwhelming hot air. Others thought the world was ending. The air outside was stifling, making it hard to breathe. In a matter of minutes, temperatures rose from 70 degrees to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
The hot winds increased to 70 mph.

What about Socorro, New Mexico on July 16, 1945 - over less than a second the temperature increased from about 70° f to about 2,500° f.
