most people growing up prior to the 80s were relatively poor. I knew we were and appreciate the values I learned.
I grew up in the 60s and early 70s, my dad, and most of my friends dad’s were engineers (moms rarely worked). I felt we were solidly middle class, but anyone under 40 today looking back at our lifestyle would think we lived in poverty. We had one car, one black &white TV, no clothes dryer, one phone in the hall, vacations were tent camping, mom made dad’s sack lunch every morning, we ate out maybe once a month.

Never thought about being poor. We grew up in Mississippi on a farm; went to school at small rural community before consolidation. Graduation was 8th grade, but it was closed when I finished 5th grade.
Some had more than others, like baseball gloves, bicycles..etc. We had to pick up pecans to sell for anything we needed. I bought my first baseball glove and rifle by saving money from pecans.
One thing that I did learn from being poor is that you can tell who was poor by how they waste their money.
Don't blow your money on shite to prove how rich you are.

When I was in high school I remember standing in line at the grocery store and seeing a lady in front of me paying her bill with food stamps. There was something familiar about the colors of the paper they were printed on, suddenly, it hit me like a brick, that was the same color of the "money" that my mom would send me to the store with to buy milk and eggs.

I still remember the exact moment and store I realized my mom was paying with food stamps.
The egoistic shame I felt then pales in comparison to the shame I feel now for not appreciating that she was doing the best she could with the life she was living.
Love you Mom.

When the water and electricity were cut off and I was eating sugar sandwiches

True story, all throughout middle school and high school I thought we were balling. It wasn't until I got a little older that I realized we weren't balling at all, it was just everyone else was way more poor. Lot of friends with single parent households, living with grandparents, typical broken home shite. I had two parents who both worked, so I thought we had it made. And to me, we did. Just having two functioning parents in a household goes a long, long way.

I remember when I was a kid my mom had to return my week old new shoes to get bread and eggs. Yea I kinda figured we weren't at the top then.

Eating wish sandwiches.. 2 pieces of bread and a piece of cheese. Wish I had some meat to go on it..
We would get 2 pair of pants and a pack of white tee shirts for school.
We weren't rich but I wouldn't consider it poor.. we never went hungry even if dad had to poach deer. A loving family and we never used any government assistance.. i learned the value of a dollar and to this day I pinch pennies. My wife grew up with money and has a hard time keeping money in her account..

I knew something was wrong while having to run alongside my friends who were on bikes. We would search the neighborhood for glass coke bottles to return them for .25. I never remember going out to eat & we had a chevy chevette. Every once and a while, I would get a hefty bag full of my friends old clothes. (I was smaller)
When we had a kid, my wife would wrap Christmas presents under the tree... I was like, Santa don't wrap gifts they just get laid out. Also remember reduced lunch. I would tell the aide my name & she would stamp a box on a card. Only got McDonalds if I was with grandma. Poor? YUP

All kids did that...
Me and some of my richest friends did that... except we got nickels....
Some of y’all are saying shite everyone’s families and all kids did....
Like the green stamps and Chef Boyardee pizzas...
My mom patched holes in my school uniforms. Hell, my son busted a hole in his Addidas schools shoes... I brought that shite to the shoe repair guy to get it patched... It was his second week of school... Still used them until this corona shite started...

Never heard of that candy. I bet you could find it somewhere on the internet
Found it. I think I liked the shiny foil package more than the actual taste of the candies.
