The stories that room could tell

Mirage was the first "mega resort" on that strip. It's smaller than most of the newer stuff now. And I think it only opened around 1990 or so.
Luxor and Excalibur are even worse. Too old to be competitive, too young to be historical.

So you don't like being charged 40% resort fees and feeling like you are getting screwed before you even get there?

If you were old enough, you'd remember in the early 1950's that the number of rooms wasn't as important as the architecture and elegance there from.
In 1954 The Fontainebleau opened on Collins Ave. in Miami Beach and it was THE place to stay and be seen.
LINK
With architectural irony now when The Fontainebleau is mentioned, one must specify either Miami or Las Vegas.

This might be up there as one of the dumbest posts I’ve ever read here, and that’s saying something.

Really sad to see hotels like the Luxor sink. When I went in the early 90s it was one of the best in Vegas from top to bottom. One trip there the Sultan of Brunei had rented two whole floors. Now, it has dropped to a step above Circus Circus.

and at least until the early aughts it hasn’t been touched by any updates or refurbishments, not even a coat of paint

The Mirage was great. I hate to see it being replaced by a freakin Hard Rock. Downgrade

The wife (no pics) and I spent a few nights at the Mirage for our 25th anniversary 3 years ago and I enjoyed it. I still have a little video of the volcano on my phone which I'm glad I do because it's a thing of the past now unfortunately

Vegas is what you make of it and you can't go there not knowing much about it and expect to have fun. You can't go with the main goal being to gamble. Its cool to visit all the casinos on the strip, but you have to get off the strip to get more for your money.

When is that guitar hotel getting built? It’s massive.

What am I missing? Isn’t it 30 tons/1370 tons, so about 2%?

talent was primo, you could stay in the best places and eat great food for cheap, the mob kept that place safe and clean, they wanted you in the casino and handing over your money

What I lament the most is the slow and steady loss of the themed properties. Most if not all new development in Vegas is almost identical. You’d never see The Venetian, Luxor, or Caesars Palace developed today. It’s all just same-ness.
