People always talk about the 70s and high interest.

I’ll tell you what, give me the prices from back then and the income from the 70s and you can give me the 13% interest rate.

Yup.
And in 50 years from now, some 30 something is going to be going off about how good you had it.

Well, considering you consistently ignore statistics such as that graph I posted for your “bootstrap” mentality, we’ll all be fricked by that point so it won’t really matter anymore.

How about actually acknowledging the fact that the system is currently screwed up significantly more than it has been for previous generations?

Hell, just looking at that graph of median home vs income I posted and it is apparent that the system is broken and it hasn’t ever been like this before.

And how do I know it’s never been like this before?

Because the data clearly shows that.

Waffle House in my town is hiring at $20/hour.
A couple both working at Waffle House are making $83,200/yr.

2 bedroom apartments and townhomes in my town are $1700/month.
They could sublet the 2nd room if money was too tight.

Is it difficult to be poor? Absolutely?
Poor and single?
Twice as hard.

But a 2 bedroom apartment is running about 24% of gross income on a Waffle House employment plan.
That's what would be considered "normal".

I linked zillow earlier for townhomes and condos for sale in Sandy Springs, GA (very nice part of town). There were 35 hits for properties for sale from $175k to $250k. The majority were well under the $230k mark.

You confuse objectively with subjectively.

This hasn't been answered. How many pages in?

Why is a first time homebuyer concerned with buying a house more expensive than 49.9% of all of the homes sold?

Why is that "the objective metric"?
It is completely irrelevant.

A better sample would be median income for first time homebuyers.
And median price for first time homebuyers.
But that article doesn't drive clicks. That article doesn't piss off the peons who want to blame something.

Then you can include the younger generations who are incredibly nihilistic and you are heading for a political and social nightmare that, I’ll point out, the older generations aren’t going to die before experiencing.

I'm legitimately terrified of it. Been busting my arse for 25 years and will work for who knows how many more to enjoy a very nice retirement, right when the fricking socialist generation who expects to be taken care of needs a lot of money to fund their social programs.

Because they think they’re too good to buy what we use to call a starter home.

Thank you for reiterating my point from earlier I feel so validated. Childcare for two children is the cost of our mortgage. We make enough to afford it (even though I do not like paying that bill every month), but also recognize that it is not affordable/doable for the majority of our peers.

I have a friend who has two kids similar in age and she has left the workforce to stay home. Now her husband bitches constantly that they're broke and says she does nothing to contribute to the house.

That is median. The upper 50% of homes aren’t the only ones that are going up in price.

The bottom is as well.

You do understand that right?

And income is not increasing at an equivalent rate to account for that.

That would most likely be even lower than the median income that they used, considering that that is all wealth groups.

They've also been taught all they need to do to reap all the rewards is simply show up. When reality smacks them in the face, they will just try to change the new reality. And then everyone will be equal in our misery. Awesome.

How about four years ago? How much harder was it then?

ETA: Median Home Sales Prices Reach Record High of $258,000 in 2019 (not bad...newsflash, the real estate market ebbs and flows)

Then stop rejecting the complaints and concerns of the younger generations so that they can feel as if they are a part of the capitalist economic system, rather than feeling as if they are being abused by it.

Because, at this moment, we are building a political group that is going to blow up a system that they see as unfair.

And we all will suffer for it.

My question is still unanswered. What do they want done about it?

There are now hundreds of comments in this thread both about how many homes are sold to first time buyers (it's a lot) and what the options are for those looking to buy. Obviously those aren't fun solutions so of course they get rejected. So what do they want done?

Government price controls? Socialism? Taxpayer funded subsidies? I hear the complaining. So what do you/they want?

Also, as I've posted, this is a generation who does not want to put in the time and effort of previous generations, prioritizes the now over planning for the future, but still expects the rewards of those who are the opposite. I cannot help that...that's on the parents of this younger generation.

Yep.

This isn’t a movement where they will grow out of it and become more conservative once they start making money.

They are currently making money and have been for years and it isn’t the outcome they were sold.
