I'm not sure that is correct.

I'm not either, but it sounds cool.

Saw this comment:

quote:

As far as we've guessed, black holes have infinite density since their mass is crushed to an infinitesimally small point. The "size" in the picture is just the size of the event horizon. The radius of the event horizon is defined by the distance at which escape velocity is the speed of light.

Which is interesting and I haven't thought about it. The mass of the black hold is crushed to an incredibly small point of infinite density (singularity). The radius of the black hole is just the effect of that mass on light (the point where the gravitational effects cause the escape velocity to be the speed of light).

There are some black holes known to be similar to Insterstellar's black hole in that they are essentially the star for the system.

Light and heat is generated from the friction of the matter spinning into the event horizon.

Black holes are some mind-warping stuff since they screw with so many things we believe happen in a fundamental way such as physics, time, etc.

The mass of the black hole located in S5 0014+81 is actually twice as massive in the one in the OP.

quote:

In 2009, a team of astronomers using the Swift Spacecraft used the luminosity output of S5 0014+81 to measure the mass of the central black hole. To their surprise, they found out that the central black hole of S5 0014+81 is actually 10,000 times more massive than the black hole at the center of our galaxy, or equivalent to 40 billion solar masses.

They are so dense and massive that the light and matter escape to a different dimension once sucked in. Almost as if the black hole punched thru the fabric of space time and is spilling out into the other side.

What if what we observe as 'dark matter' in our universe could very well likely be what is spit out from another dimension's black hole? I believe they have studied them enough to know that 'dark matter' is real due to gravitational effects but has no light.

It's bigger than we can understand....yet could be smaller than a quirk because we have never seen it.

You could do the same with dollar bills and a Walton heir's money since they are each worth at least $20B

It's equally mind blowing when you work your way backwards from the larger perspective you're showing.

The following link is the solar system worked out to proper scale, setting the scale with the moon being equal to 1 pixel...

solar system if moon were one pixel

... you have to scroll to the right for a long time through empty space to see the planets. It's astonishing how truly empty space is.

From there, consider that a typical atom on earth is empty on a similar scale: I think the proper scale is roughly along the lines of considering the nucleus of the atom to be a ball sitting in the middle of a football field while the elecrons are like smaller balls whipping around the perimeter of the stadium.

When you consider how astonishingly empty atoms are, and how empty the solar system truly is... then see the solar system being a speck in the middle of the 2nd black hole image you posted... then realize that in the black hole all of this empty space has been collapsed and filled with matter, it's impossible to wrap your mind around the sheer volume of matter and impossibility of existence as we perceive it.

it's funny when entertainment portrays a black hole as an actual "hole." like you could go through it, survive and end up somewhere else.
