I've practiced medicine flawlessly for over a decade and fake it all the time at work. So far so good.

Sounds like you are ready to stop practicing and actually go out there and do it.

I agree with OP. Its better to hone your craft and have undeniable skills. I've always wondered, all the people who "fake it", what are they faking? I'd rather be real.

Yeah, y'all are taking it all wrong. The original meaning was to imitate those who are successful until you master what you're doing.

Its not laziness, its usually considered sage advice in business.

Therapist are like women. You try them out and find one that fits you. You wouldn’t give up womenz if one didn’t work out.

Bull shite. It's excellent advice and has nothing to do with inauthenticity or lying or being a cheeseball. It just means that in life, if we are to grow, we must get out of our comfort zones and try to master difficult things.

Elizabeth Holmes agrees…

You learn by imitating those who know, until you master your own style.

That's all it means.

The only way to get good at your job is to keep doing it(faking it) until you are competent.

I agree with OP in that it seems like, this being the true meaning of the phrase, a rather large portion of this generation has taken it to mean "I don't know anything and that's okay because nobody else does either"

I agree that everyone's always learning, but people that talk big shite with confidence because they assume they can "fake it till they make it" aren't learning. They're getting over by being shitty.

But aren't we all "faking it" in some way? in life you truly don't know how to do anything until you actually do it. For instance, raising children, there's no one way to do it, every kid is different. you think you know how to do it, until you've been up for 4 days straight trying to figure out how to get the thing to quit crying and go to sleep. or you think you know what they will eat, until they don't anymore. what worked for months all of a sudden doesn't work anymore. we're all just trying to make it work as best as we can.

My kids look at me like I have all the answers, but in reality I don't know shite.

Yes fake it till you make it is a mantra best summarized by George Costanza when he said,

Remember, it’s not a lie unless you believe it girl

Its about perseverance, dude

Take a teacher on their very first day. They dont know shite. But they cant let the students know that, or they will be eaten alive

so they "fake it" until they gain enough experience to be effective at it

I think it means act confident in what you do and people will look past little mistakes. Obviously if you don’t know what you’re doing people will figure it out.
