These were Italians Same thing

My dad’s family is Sicilian Italian in Baton Rouge. My mom married in and was buying groceries at a store in Central.

A little old lady in line told her “it’s a shame a nice white girl like you married an Italian”

Just started reading Mafia Kingfish. Knew the general story but seeing the details. Damn.

Amazing how Long collaborated with the mafia. Not to be confused with the Maggia

On my dad’s side of the family they had to change their last name to sound more "Mexican/hispanic" because they were looked at more fondly than Italians. My dad’s side could pass off as either.

But the mob went on to have a lot of influence not just in New Orleans, but in towns outside of New Orleans along the Mississippi River until well into the 1990s right?

I've heard stories about activities involving the Italian mob in some of these places. I know this isn't specifically about this title, the lynching of the mafia, but I am saying that although there was a push to end their activity they remained influential, as an illegal entity... but by the beginning of the 21 century the ones who were around ended up going "legal". Its a fascinating history.

In the US? Maybe. But look at England and they used to hang men left and right

They hanged 24 in a single day at Tyburn

More Europeans were hanged than Africans, BY FAR.

There's a pretty good NOLA series on the Infamous America podcast that had a couple episodes on this event.

Seemed as though it might have been an interesting video but I cannot interpret the narrators specific form of Ayenglish ebonics.

I have always read/seen this as being reported as true. People forget with NYC, but New Orleans was the first mass Sicilian/Italian immigration spot. The first "mafia" (not LCN but blackhand and older pre-commission mafia) was in New Orleans.

There is also a book and a movie about these events.

Turns out this was the largest mass lynching in US history - ironic it was Italians, not blacks.
