The Lynching of the Mafia

Doing some reading on the 1891 lynching of the Mafia in New Orleans. The anti-Mafia police chief was murdered in 1890. He said with his dying breath the Dagos killed him. The suspects were acquitted a year later. A mob of several thousand stormed the prison and lynched or shot to death 11 suspected Mafiosos. Here are some of the newspaper articles from the Times-democrat and the Picayune

Respect the effort but I can’t read any of that

HBO made a movie about the lynching. It created an international incident and Italy made a formal protest in Washington.

I miss the mob. At least crime was organized back then.

It still stands as the most people lynched at one time in US history. Even during slavery, 11 were never lynched at one time.

You would think from our media hundreds of blacks were lynched daily or weekly

Didn't stop the growth of the mafia, did it?
The truth was that Hennessey was in bed with one of the groups. They pretty much ran the port because most of the Longshoremen back then were Sicilian with a smaller amount of Irish thrown in for good measure. Hennessey wasn't clean, no one back then was. The port made a lot of money for the city both legitimately and not so legitimate and everyone was in on the act. The cops, politicians, bankers, mafia you name it.
