What other devices are plugged into those circuits that need to continuously run when the lights aren’t?

Breakers providing power to lights typically power ONLY the lights. Lighting and outlets aren't sharing a circuit to the panel on commercial projects. Water heaters and other direct-wired items also typically have a dedicated circuit to the panel.

Are we that goshdamned fricking lazy nowadays that we can't be bothered to fricking switch on and off a light?

Almost all local/state energy codes will require automatic lighting shutoff in schools.

This is a large school, so the lights are almost certainly 277V. The amount of equipment that runs at 277V is pretty limited (mostly smaller HVAC equipment like cassettes, unit ventilators, etc). Definitely no refrigerators.

Aside from bathroom fart fans in residential type construction, I've never put other equipment on the same circuit with lighting. And I've never seen existing drawings by other engineers that called for it, either. I think that the teachers/maintenance are just being lazy.

The only excuse that I can think of is that, once the circuits are switched off, the battery backups in some of the corridor/stair fixtures are liable to drain overnight (they only provide 90 minutes worth of power). Maybe the school doesn't want to be in a situation where the building is occupied while the batteries are recharging in the morning.

Any legitimate electrician will run separate circuits for lighting, appliances, and things such as HVAC, etc. They should never be on the same circuit for reasons just like this. You mark the lighting circuits on the interior lights, leave the rest on. If it isn't wired liked that, then they should be suing everybody who built it, paid for it, and approved it.

This is the kind of dumbass story that gives credence to people who say the moon landing was faked.

So you want me to believe that 50 years ago we landed on the moon AND came home multiple times using guidance computers with less computing power than the chip in my fridge…….

But today we can’t turn off the lights at a school?

And I’m like yeah but but but….

Nevermind

Lol! That’s why I am not all about the new “smart” devices. Just more crap to break.

Imagine having to flip the breakers to shut off the lights

There is probably a disconnect switch...don't even need to get into a panel for that.

Okay let’s do the math.

Let’s say the fixtures use 4 20 watt LED bulbs. That is 80 watts per fixture. If run for 24 hours, 24x80, that is 1920 watts or 1.9 kWH. At 20 cents a kWH, that is about 40 cents per fixture in the school to run 24 hours in a day. If you have 50 of these fixtures running like this, that will cost you about 20 dollars a day in electricity or 600 dollars in 30 day period.

Was that too hard for the writers of this story to do?

If ol’ Aaron’s arse was on the line for this, I guarantee they’d be off with the quickness.

Guarantee they know how to turn the lights on & off at the local trade school.

My guess is they could flip the breaker off and turn them off.

But when they flip the breaker back on in the morning, there is something in the computer that has to do something to allow the connection to happen / lights to turn on.

That, or with 7,000 lights, there are many, many, many breakers to contend with.
