re: The latest money grab from New Orleans: Balconies, stoops could face 'encroachment' taxes

I understand the need for air rights when you are building a big arse sky scraper and could even get behind the logic of implementing them for balconies that are built after the law is made but to create them for existing structures many of which are historical sites that can't be touched? That's super fricking bullshite.

The city says it has taken the position that all "encroachments," including balconies, stoops and eaves, belong to the city and therefore must be leased from the city, according to the Vieux Carre Property Owners, Residents and Associates (VCPORA).
LOL Wat?
Why not just declare all of the French Quarter a huge easement and make them start paying leases for it? Just go for the jugular now.
If the statues coming down don't deter the crimes, this will do the trick.
They may as well start charging the tourists rental fees for using the air in the quarter too, and tolls for walking the streets. For the residents they should charge property taxes for the clothes they wear and the air they breath.
Also, this will instantly drive down property values around the quarter. Just the thing that responsible homeowners crave.
WTF.

Never thought I'd say this but the city council needs to stick to removing those evil statues.

Based on the news this evening I would say that only new construction will be taxed as this has turned into a political shite storm.

Didn't take long for New Orleans to get back to the 1980's where they taxed the shite out of everything. All the taxpayers should go on welfare.

"air rights."
What
The
frick
Why stop at air rights that extend horizontally? Why not set a vertical limit to property and tax anything that extends over it?
The fact this discussion even got this far is absolutely insane

I reckon now you NOLAians know who will be financing the rassis statue relocates.
Posted on 3/17/17 at 10:09 pm to White Bear
Mitch should have left the statues up and charged the SOCV rent.

I would support a riot if this were to actually happen.

Stacy Head is one of the few on the city council that has even half of a brain.
What a bunch of complete f***ing imbeciles. How did they even come up with this shite? You think any of these crooked bastards would pay a balcony tax for their own property? If they think the statue issue caused a shite storm, if they try to move forward and make this a bigger thing, they will have a shite storm the size of Katrina's momma that will hit New Orleans.

This kind of bullshite is why, as boring as Metry is, I will NEVER own property in NOLA. The government is especially incompetent (even by LA standards) and the city's demographics will keep it that way for as long as I'm alive. It's really heartbreaking as I love the culture (not the clutcha) and architecture. I'm an educated, white collar worker making decent money. I WANT to give the city my tax dollars. But they raise the taxes so high and implement so many dumbass laws/regulations that they push me away. The city is one law eliminating short-term rentals (which could happen) away from being in trouble.

These leases would not be limited to the French Quarter and Marigny. Areas like the Treme, CBD, Warehouse and Lower Garden Districts would also be subject to these fines.
I guess if we taxed stoops/balconies in the 9th ward, east and algiers, we'd be racist.

Step #21 for turning our city into Detroit.
Can't wait to see the next step bringing us closer to Detroit.
