re: The last finalist for EBRP School Superintendent Withdraws

The board members not wanting Smith want an outsider with no connections to the District. Someone with a fresh perspective and has no political ties to anyone currently there. Someone with with innovative ideas regarding public education that has had success dealing with a majority minority populace. Adam Smith is none of these things. In fact, he’s the opposite of these things.

Anybody know what was decided? I turned it off & fell asleep about 12:30 and it was still going on. They were asking to appoint Smith for a one year term while they start the search over.
They attempted a 90 day contract with Smith in which they would notify him of a cancellation of the contract the same day. This would allow them to stay in legal compliance and at the same time give them 3 months to hire someone else. That motion failed.
There is no plan. They have no finalists, no advertisements, and no plans in place to address this currently.

That was Sito, that was Brown, that was Taylor, that was Dillworth. It’s not like this hasn’t been done before, the last four outsiders were disasters. The only two superintendents that served more that one contract in my memory were Drake and Placide, the ones with ties to the district. Perhaps the community has noticed this trend as well.
Either way, those Board members willingly decided to be out of compliance tonight by thumbing their nose to even a 90 day temporary contract when they have no plan on the table because all the candidates withdrew.

Hell. At this point, the new school year is fast approaching. Give Smith a one year contract with an explicitly stated, specific set of goals for review in 9 months. The goals have to be specific and realistic. At that time, he either heats a longer term contract or the search begins again.

You're not gonna believe this but I just got back from the future. Adam Smith fails. And then the person after him fails. And then the person after him fails too.
There is only one way to fix this school system... Completely dismantle it and then rebuild. The teachers are bad, the principals are really bad, and every other person involved over them are really REALLY bad. I'm guessing that at some point, there will have to be some governmental injunction to take it over. But until they find someway to clean out the rot, this is all for absolutely naught.
If you have children being educated by the EBRPSS and you've watched one second of these press conferences, you need to get them out of it. It's doomed.. There is no saving it.

“Equitable” - “I focus on poorly performing black students and not any other group.”
The system being 70% black and focusing on kids who may never succeed instead of all kids or at least propping up the ones buoying the district’s test scores is going to be a clusterfrick and may cause the “Together Baton Rouge” idiots who opposed St George to try and get that ISD up and running soon.

The only people left who may realize that are either in the magnet system or too poor for private school and would be moving to Zachary, Central, Livingston, Ascension, etc. like normal.
The magnet people fought St George hard because they were happy with where they were. And the EBRPSB fricked the magnet programs after that yet they still stayed.

First step is dissolving the city-parish form of government. Once that happens, the city of BR can start their own district like the city of Monroe and the city of Bogalusa. More local control, for better or worse (it can’t get much worse).

Remainder of the EBRPSS is mainly BR.
St George will be leaving eventually and the only other significant area outside city limits would be the Pride / Deerford area covered by Northeast.

Give Smith a one year contract
The last I saw, the public comments were asking for this. Which is probably the right move. What self respecting person is gonna sign a 90 day contract knowing they’ll get a 90 day termination notice the same day?
I also don’t understand what Patrick Martin & Nathan Rust are trying to accomplish here. Chances are their kids don’t attend public school & in 5-10 years they’ll be in the St George ISD. Just give them what they want FFS.
Who was the board member that just up & quit last year? Talk about foreshadowing.

Those two want to crash the school system and let the state take control and appoint a superintendent. They need to be trialed for negligence for being unwilling to work with others in avoiding being out of compliance once Tuesday hits and they have no superintendent.

And you are right. A federal judge ordered desegregation in the early 80's. It immediately went downhill.
I went to Bellaire for kindergarten the ‘79-80 school year. Moved back to NOLA and was enrolled in Catholic School for the ‘80-81 school year.

Nope. I taught for 22 years in the middle schools of north Baton Rouge.
Public school system in East baton Rouge cannot be saved. Sorry .
The only solution is to end it. Liquidate and sell the properties , layoff the personnel. Parents that truly want an education for their children will find a way to get it for them.
For those that will say 'this will violate state laws' , we are wasting millions of dollars of taxpayer's money, the children are being shortchanged on getting an education.
The present system/model has proven that it cannot work in this parish.

It seems like they want to completely dismantle ebr schools and hand control over to charters.
Likely would be an improvement

You’re kidding right? Those two are doing God’s work. They know what a disaster hiring Smith would be and they’re trying to be the adults in the room. I have much more respect for those two than Gaudet, the spineless beta that could’ve put all of this behind us had he not abstained from the vote last week. His vote would’ve ended all this crap but he kowtowed to the mob. You should direct your anger at the Board members who, in an infantile fit, decided to take their ball and go home when their candidate wasn’t chosen in a fair vote. Frick em all

If hiring Smith would be such a “disaster,” then stop hiring him as interim. These fools are blatantly and recklessly thumbing their nose at the LAW. It’s unethical and a waste of tax payer dollars.

Those 2 likely don’t have kids in EBR public school & in 5 years will be part of the STG ISD.
Why tf do they even care who the Superintendent is? Let the clowns run the circus.

Because we pay for tickets whether kids attend or not.
Hell, I figure going full charter won’t necessarily hurt because that fixed Orleans Parish schools post-Katrina. They were set to be taken over by the state before the storm wiped out the city and there had to be a planned rebuild.

Did it? New Orleans is currently a C district, EBR is currently a C district.
