Heres what I dont get. I have precheck, the "don't take your shoes off" thing.
Same pair of shoes. Some days they alarm. Some days they don't. The staff gets real smarmy with me about taking my shoes off cause "they're old shoes". I get smarmy right back that they should either calibrate their machines properly or drop the "no shoes" policy.
Of course they don't care and I have to go back and take off my shoes while some suburban housewives tell me I'm in the no-shoes line...

This.
When I go to different courthouses, I understand that security will be different at each one, because each is run by a different sheriff’s department. When the average person shows up to an airport staffed with federal TSA agents, they are expecting it to be the same as their last experience with TSA agents, and it almost never is. And as you said, the agents will sometimes have an attitude about it. I genuinely feel badly overhearing people getting frustrated over silly things like jackets and electronics.
I have precheck, and the fact that even my experience wildly differs between airports is absurd.

The shoes have a bit of metal in them, but not much. So depending on how you’re walking, and how quickly you’re walking, sometimes it will trigger and sometimes it won’t. Happens with women in heels at the courthouse because there’s a thin metal nail in the heel.
Try not to have a foot land between the sensors and try not to have your feet overlap (ie side by side) between the sensors. It will still be a craps shoot, but you’ll have better luck with it.

I always get to the airport early and walk around. Have seen a few TSA morning meetings going on. Not sure what background checks are done but these meetings go a lot like a Burger King pre shift meeting.

I wish all the airports would get the new scanners so I can stop pulling my electronics out.
The lines for those scanners takes twice as long as the old ones.

Not in my experience

You're not wrong OP. We just came back from SLC Utah on Saturday and TSA in my opinion has become the new DMV dickheads. You can tell morale is low in there industry and most are unhappy with their jobs. I can understand as most view them as a hinderance.

I'm just hoping some chick who looks like an East German weightlifter doesn't snap on a rubber glove and ask me to step into an inspection room.
If it looks anything like a chick it will still have an Adams Apple and will molest you in public.

It's all theater and does virtually nothing to increase the security and safety of air travel.
This, back when I was actively hiking a lot across the United States, I accidentally brought knives on board with my hiking bag at least 6 times in about two years.

The inconsistencies between airports is frustrating.
Yep, I've been at airports where I instinctively pull out my laptop and remove my shoes and belt. And then they scream at you "You don't need to do that!!!".

I've noticed that the pre-check lines are so long now in some airports that it is faster to take the other line.

This. Or the opposite and they treat you like an idiot. What pisses me off is my home airport (VPS) in Fort Walton Beach is small. I don't have to remove my shoes or belt.
You then fly out of somewhere large that you'd assume has BETTER tech, and they make you do things the old school way and treat you like an idiot for not knowing. Post some bigger signs to help people prepare.
They have a shitty job, I try to be nice and treat them with respect. But its extremely difficult when their directions are terrible and demeanor is worse.

I've thought this at times also, but its really not the case. The original line maybe longer, but they usually have more staff past the original line and its still much faster.

You going to Disney world or something? A real man doesn’t travel because he knows the plant would shut down if he missed a day

I'm sure there's some exception somewhere, but while I've seen longer precheck lines, between the lower security level and (generally speaking) the higher level of traveler knowledge, the precheck lines move much, much faster than the normal lines.

One time I complained to a nearby TSA douche when I saw a ten year old girl getting patted down. No relation and her father was standing right there but it was clearly bullshite.
“She could have a weapon and hand it off once on the plane” he said in broken English.
We are a broken society for allowing this type of bullshite to happen.
