Defense attorneys for 27-year-old Anthony Dearmas said Wednesday that the Slidell-area man never should have been left alone with his 6-week-old fraternal twins, one of whom died in May 2017 from injuries that police say were inflicted by his father. Dearmas, who is on trial for the first-degree murder of Karter Smith, has pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity. In opening arguments in 22nd Judicial District Court, his attorneys pointed to a long history of trauma, abuse at the hands of his mother and a diminished mental capacity that they said made Dearmas incapable of developing the intent to kill his newborn son.

quote:

The child's mother, Delnita Smith, testified Wednesday that she was working a night shift at Waffle House and had left the twins as well as her 3-year-old son, Darius, with Dearmas at their trailer house, as she had the previous two nights. Smith said Dearmas tried to call her around midnight during her shift and she took a break to call him back, at which point he told her Karter was not breathing. Smith said she urged Dearmas to call the police and reached out to her cousin, Ganarro Johnson, who lived in the trailer with them and was returning home. Johnson, who also testified Wednesday, said he entered the home to find Dearmas staring at Karter, who had blood coming from his nose and was turning blue with an inverted stomach. Dearmas had not called the police. Johnson called 911 around 1 a.m., and emergency responders arrived at the house, but Johnson said Dearmas refused to surrender the child for medical attention, saying he would drive Karter to the hospital himself. St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office Deputy Scott Dawson said that Johnson and Dearmas fought while the child was lying in a car seat, but EMS workers were finally able to get the baby and take him to the hospital. Karter was found to be brain dead and died a few days later.

quote:

Dearmas said that he had grown frustrated with the baby's crying and punched the child, who then fell from the family's couch.

Well girls probably shouldn’t get into cars with strangers either but I don’t know if that defense will fly.

When Mrs. Rusty and I were preparing to welcome our little one I was reading some of the hospital literature and couldn't believe how ridiculous some of it was.

"Never leave your newborn with someone who is immature or has anger management issues"

It is beyond comprehension that someone would strike a newborn, much less their own child, out of frustration. This kind of shite is hard to read.

That probably had a little to do with it.

I think we need to allow cruel and unusual punishment

If a license to procreate were instituted then such things could probably be avoided.

I can't think of a punishment cruel enough for a parent who would kill their child. That's supposed to be the one person they can always look to for protection.

If you have never been alone with an infant that won’t stop crying, you don’t know what it’s like and you don’t know that you wouldn’t feel the urge to make it stop however you could.

Babies should not be left alone with mentally unstable people, especially not men who are mentally unstable.

Yeah, I know the first time my wife left me with one of our sons I was really worried that he would cry and I would kill him. That's totally normal

My daughter has had medical issues since she was born and I’ve never thought to shake her or do anything violent thru sleepless nights after working doubles in the medical field but I’m not a worthless piece of shite.

It’s normal to be frustrated with an infant that won’t stop crying. Denying that would be stupid.

It’s irresponsible in the extreme to leave a mentally unstable man with a crying infant.

If that seems ridiculous to you, then congratulations either on your ignorance of what it is like or your admirable patience.

I doubt anyone would disagree

Shoot him in the face.

Man, I have an 11 month old and this really pissed me off more than usual.

Kill the guy. Kill him dead.

I've been in this position dozens and dozens of times.

Stop making excuses for a grown man and the father of that child. He murdered the innocent baby. Period.

Saying he was too stupid to know he couldn't punch a newborn is a load of fricking bullshite. Just leave the house and call another adult if you can't take it, at least the kid will likely survive.

This statement, in the context of this thread, is absolutely fricking ridiculous...
