I turn my trash can upside down to assert dominance.

Depends on the trash service company. Some have an automated system so they can do more with less. Essentially a metal grabber arm picks the can up and dumps it up and over the side of the garbage truck. With this equipment the opening end of the can faces the street. If you have a garbage service that still dumps in the back and handles everything by hand im sure they appreciate you putting handles to the street.

To get rid of an old trash container here we have to email or call the waste management company. They will send someone to collect the old one by scheduling pickups every couple of months. They won’t use the mechanized trucks to grab an old can and drop it in the trash bin on the truck.

Thursday is my garbage collection day, and I enjoy watching out my office window when they dump the trash. It's the most entertainment a work from home day has to offer usually. Used to put the handle facing backwards, but noticed they spin the thing around before dumping it, so I started facing the handle forward.

They need to grab the handle, to pull it to the back of the truck. So just put the handle side towards the street ( unless they have a grabbing arm that they use on the truck).

I always drag it down the driveway and turn it around to where the front of the lid faces the street.
Never thought much about it; just seemed natural.

When placing garbage cans (also called carts or bins) for automated truck pickup, the correct orientation is very important to ensure the truck’s mechanical arm can properly grab and empty the can.
? Correct Placement:
Face the handles and wheels away from the street, towards your house or the curb.
The lid should open towards the street.
Leave space: At least 3 feet between carts and any other objects (like cars, mailboxes, or other bins).

If you have guys manually lifting and dumping them his way is probably better for the workers.
The orientation of the trash cans that are emptied by automated arm trash trucks are mandated by the design of the arm apparatus and the can.

If you have a garbage truck that lifts the cans. Then face the can to the street. If you have hoppers that grab the can and dump into the back of a truck face the handle to the street to make easier to grab fast.

Ours has an arrow. It is picked up by a machine (not a guy on the back bumper).
If you put it facing the wrong way they will just pass it by, because if they try to pick it up with the lid the wrong way it will scatter your trash all over the road.
Then you get to enjoy the smell of 2 week old chicken or shrimp.

I’m the only person in my cul-de-sac that places the handles facing the street. I just talked to the guy that picks up the garbage and asked him what he prefers? Handles forward was his answer.
