Power just went out in southdowns. Just looked at map, 9 customers affected with restoration date of 8/19
Loud boom so I'm assuming a transformer blew

Ascension parish schools are now closed indefinitely.
where did you hear this from?
Just wondering because the last I heard was that they were (obviously) closed the rest of the week and were in the process of making plans to get the students back to school and would announce that by the end of the week. (per the Ascension Parish press release).
Never said anything about being out indefinitely.
My daughter is a teacher in AP. They don't have a target date yet for reopening.
I think indefinitely isn't the word he was looking for.
From AP School facebook:
We are not closed indefinitely. We are closed through this week for students and employees. We are currently collecting information from our employees and about the six out of 27 impacted schools in order to make a decision on reopening.

The national media coverage has been slow or lacking to say the least, but once again ESPN coming thru in a big way. Just watched a 5 minute segment on SportCenter on the disaster , everyone effected, and how people could help. SVP doing work. God Bless that man, he is a Louisiana resident at heart.

I appreciate that this finally seems to be getting national attention but the nationals need to realize that this flood disaster is not over. Hundreds of homes are still at risk as long as water is still filling up the Spanish Lake and Bluff Swamp area. Our yard is slowly still filling up with water in St. Gabriel.

You're welcome. My kids also attended Galvez Primary.
Another consideration AP has is the loss of some of the buses. So buildings and transportation are in the mix.

I was thinking of that also. I'm also assuming that there may be teachers who have lost their cars due to flooding. Not to mention the teachers/drivers who have lost their homes and will take some time getting settled again.
I'm hoping Galvez Primary wasn't hit too hard, still might be a few day before they can get to the schools.
If anything positive has come from this is that it has brought the community together. Met a ton of neighbors I've never met before and had the opportunity to get to know a few of them.

The EBR Schools Facebook page is getting blasted for informing people that they're going to attempt to open schools next week. These idiot parents and even teachers/staff are cursing them for this decision. As if there will be no consideration for students/teachers/bus drivers who are dealing with the aftermath of the flooding.

It's storming hard right now. Southeast EBR can't take too much water because every creek and bayou in the area is still up to the road where it crosses.
Bingo. I just spent 5 hours sandbagging a property in North Baton Rouge that didn't flood earlier this week. Water was getting into the property because the ground can't hold any more. P.S. The fire station on Perkins off College drive still has sand bags.

When salmen high got destroyed in Katrina, they made an arrangement with northshore high, since northshore high did not have any damage. Northshore high students went from like 6am to noon and salmen high students went from like 1pm to 7pm. Since some teachers were not able to come back right away, some NHS teachers ended up teaching SHS students and vice versa.
I wonder if the same type of arrangement will be made in LP and AP.

Yes, my daughter knows a couple of teachers that have had to relocate outside of the area and I'm sure some have lost their cars.
I lived most of my life in AP and surrounding area and it's just so inspiring to see everyone help their neighbors.

It really is amazing how people here have taken care of each other and come together.
When you consider the high percentage of flooded schools and buses, plus an even higher percentage of teachers and students who have literally lost everything they had, I think they should delay the school year for at least 3 more weeks.
The water hasn't even made it out of some of them yet. It's the right thing to do for everyone IMO.

I wouldn't put anything past that school district. I don't believe they have it in them to figure out the logistics of this in time for Monday.
They should call Super. He'd figure it out and have them all graduating a month early.
