I was there... very young at the time. I actually have a crap load of pictures I took that day.

My dad went to some great concerts at what is now independence park. He said some major promoter was from here and his family lived in BR so he pushed a lot of big shows in on their way to and from NOLA.

The Stones opened their 1975 tour in the Assembly Center. Not just played Baton Rouge - opened the tour with two dates.
An old line cook I worked with years ago (putting myself through LSU) relayed the scene. They opened with Angie, with Mick screaming the name for 2-3 minutes in what was probably a drug fueled stream of consciousness before kicking off a memorable show.
They opened in BR because if it sucked - it's Baton Rouge. Who really gives a shite?

no hyphen.
relisten. it has 10,900 dead shows (not individual shows, they may have 15 sources for the same show)
but hey have about 100 other artist from John Popper to Galactic, to Grace Potter, to Drive-by Truckers to Warren Zevon shows too.

It's not just Baton Rouge; when I look at old tour dates for classic rock legends, I'm always amazed at the smaller venues they played. The basketball arena at A&M hosted some big name concerts in addition to the Texas World Speedway outside of town. Even Hoffeinz Pavilion at the University of Houston hosted a lot of big acts, which is unthinkable now.
I think the concert business has just changed since the 80's. Big names figured out they could market ticket scarcity and charge more playing fewer venues. There's also been an explosive growth in large venues and festivals. For smaller acts, there's probably an economy of scale benefit to doing the festival circuit instead of organizing true national tours.

It was called "The New Orleans Pop Festival". It was just behind where Sammy's is now on Airline in Prairieville.
WikiLink
It was two weeks after Woodstock, and it had a nice line-up including Jefferson Airplane, The Dead, Joplin, The Byrds, Santana, etc.
If you are ever in Raising Cane's in Prairieville, they have a nice write up on it in the restaurant.

It isn't about the music or the experience anymore...it's charging as many people a premium as you can. It's why rock and roll is dead, man.

I know its hard for people to believe this, but BR was the Austin of the 70s and 80s.

It amazes me the weed we smoked in the Assembly Center (now the PMAC) or the Centroplex (now the Raising Canes River Center) and no one said a word. The whole place was full of pot smoke and the next day the Tigers would play a ball game.
1978 Wille Nelson Birthday party They also allowed you to bring ice chest, beer, Liquor & lawn chairs into the PMAC for an all day/night event. It was crazy.
In fairness the concert was originally scheduled for the state fairgrounds and moved due to flooding.

All ended when reporters were at aCDC concert at centroplex. They saw weed being smoked and totally freaked out. Didn't help that place was filled over capacity either. The headlines sent the cops and politicians running in with new rules and a heavy police presence.

I remember my dad telling me there was a concert at Centroplex (an 80s band, but I don't remember who) where the crowds got way too rowdy, and the city decided to put an end to the concerts. Not sure how true that is.

AC/DC it was. Advocate had sent a bunch of reporters undercover. The next morning pictures on the front page of the Advocate of a 15 year old kid passed in a pile of puke outside the centroplex.
