It will probably take over an hour just for the “Williams’s” to graduate.

Yep. Social media has created a world of attention whores.

It has, but this behavior long predates social media.

Are we really scrutinizing families of children that went through college and earned an education? ?

Some of you are so myopic it’s not even funny.

Most people on the OT are selfish narcissist. Having empathy for other people is not something that ks common on this board.

Ironic since the behavior being discussed is 100% selfishly narcissistic.

The absolute rudeness and inconsiderate nature of loud boisterous hollering is what drives me crazy. Almost every graduation I’ve been to the officiant instructs the audience to hold their applause until Mr. Zygnox or whatever’s name is called.

What gives ANY person, family, group, etc. the right to think their graduate is more important than the next graduate in line? This is the behavior that is driving people away from brick and mortar stores, sporting events, and public places in general including graduations.

My wife disagrees with me, because she takes your position like, “baby some of those poor kids that’s all they are going to accomplish”. Frick that! My child’s high school graduation was nothing short of chaos. (“Don’t worry baby he’s got a college one to go to”). Cirmstances were that he couldn’t walk for college (he was in school elsewhere). Then he graduated Law School (LSU) and damned if there weren’t more dumbasses hooting and hollering there too. I wonder if Harvard or Yale has this bullshite?

I know I’m old but more and more I get like Gus McCrae ... “Rudeness in a man ... I won’t tolerate it.”

First, not everyone has your same life experiences and circumstances. For other families, college is the expectation. For others college is something that is a distant hoop dream, that seems largely impossible. How can you fault someone for possibly changing their entire family's trajectory.

People having empathy wouldn't be interrupting graduation and taking up other people's time by celebrating during the ceremony.

Wouldn’t the only other option be ignorance?

Think about it. Trauma can be passed down generationally. Lots of things are. Who’s to say that tribal dances, celebrations, etc. that took place for millennia didn’t become ingrained in genes? It isn’t unheard of.

Yeah how pathetic to be so proud of a college graduate that you get giddy and overwhelmed with joy.

The nerve.

Parents are going to cheer for their kids no matter what, as they should.

I like the way, my college did it. Instruct parents thay they have 3 seconds to cheer as their child walks to receive their diploma. Then quiet down as the next name is called. That seems to work well, and i dont think there's ever been an issue with not hearing the next name called.

I applaud people for changing their family’s trajectory.

I fault people who have expectations of mediocrity. Those kids got accepted to school just like everyone else which means that they all had a reasonable chance of graduating, according to the school.

Their families are doing them a disservice by lowering the bar for otherwise capable people.

Yelling for 2-3 seconds is not interrupting graduation. Unless your graduations yoi have attended are different from mine. At everyone theres about a 2-3 second pause between each name being called to allow them to walk and be seen on stage. Cheering within that time before the next name is called should not be a bad thing.
