about the only thing they could trademark would be the graphics/title associated with their videos.
They can't trademark the concept or anything.
Furthermore, their "apology" was so horrible, it made them look even worse.
They compare what they are doing to franchising but they are so totally wrong, it's not even funny. What they are doing is saying, "use our format and let us take some of your money....or we'll just shut your channel down."
They had like 14 million subscribers. If 40,000 decided to start making videos under their licensing format and a few thousand actually made money, the finebros would be reaping some big money for doing nothing...which is what they wanted.

Not really. It's people watching a show and answering questions. That has been around forever and by specific, according to the copyright attorney I posted, it would have to be down to the second.
They watch with the box in the corner and cut from person to person then have the question portion where they also provide background to the video. It has been copied beat by beat because they have perfected and truthfully to do it any other way would be substandard

How retarded do the Fine Bros think YouTube users are? I mean sure from the comment section you'd think they were, but surely to god they can fathom that the Fine Brothers taking away say 10% of their cash flow and them having nothing to do with it it is a major issue here. When watching their retarded scam video, it's hard not to imagine Vito and Michael Corleone threatening a shop keeper for "protection money".
It's that and they're threatening to sue anyone who makes a reaction video, as if it were such an original concept. This would be like America's Funniest Home Videos saying it has the right to anyone who releases a funny home video. Wouldn't technically reviewing a movie or food technically count as "reacting"? This just reminds me of the Batman episode where Joker tries to trademark fishes in general, and then kills everyone in the copyright offices when they inform him that he can't copyright a natural resource. Nice job trying to take over the internet like a bunch of idiots.

Siskel and Ebert for god's sake was this. Mystery Science Theater 3000 basically is this. Opie & Anthony largely consist on reactions to movies and media. It was done before the Internet itself. How the hell can they defend reaction videos to any random thing they can think of?

Wow, after watching their announcement video and their non-apology apology, I've concluded that the Fine Brothers have a really inflated level of self-importance. They think that their videos are somehow cultural phenomena that will be looked back at by future generations...

They should grow up and get a real job
A successful full time youtube channel is likely more complicated and demanding in terms of figuring out ALL the cogs you need to fully understand to be sure it stays together, also effort and time spent than most "real" jobs. I was under this impression too a while back, but I was dead wrong. It's a seriously intense model if you do it right.
As to the OP, it's shocking these guys weren't smarter about doing this video as if it wouldn't cause SERIOUS backlash. I suppose they thought they were far more insulated with their fans than they actually were.

I'd love for Beavis and Butthead to briefly come out of retirement to do a similar beat down of their video.

What gets me is that trademarks filings are not public unless the person who files it spills the beans. They could have waited the 30 day public opposition period without saying a word and it would have been trademarked with little to zero opposition.
Their arrogance and inflated sense self-importance led to them literally posting this "announcement" how they were changing the world and are literally "the future of entertainment". I have no idea how they thought this would go over well. The original video even makes a statement that "in 100 years people will look back to THIS video". Well, that might be true but not for the reason they thought.

It's such a weak trademark that it could have probably been easily challenged even if they did this.

bingo... kept saying how it would "change the world."
They got blinded by their vision... like, in a hilarious way. However, they're paying the price in full for that sort of silliness. Totally self-important/conceited by nature sort of message. They definitely showed their hand. Pretty humbling if you're a youtuber to see JUST how quickly you can hurt your channel.

Are you serious?
BTW, they didn't even create that format. There was another guy doing it way before them and the Fine Bros got his channel shut down AFTER they started doing their series. It was all over Reddit. They basically stole his format then pursued him legally using a few other copyrights they have secured.
They are scum.

I love how they also have a show called "Youtubers React". They can kiss that show goodbye for the foreseeable future. Really, they could have feasibly have attempted to exhort all Youtubers for money. From the small guys who just wants to show he and his friends reactions to trailers, to mainstream reviewers who react to movies and TV shows, to big shots like Conan and Kimmel who depend on "reaction" videos as well. I can see those two bringing this into the limelight this week and utterly destroying them for all they're worth. Wouldn't be shocked if they went down to the seven digit range again with Subscribers.

Yeah, my wife was showing me that thing last night. It's BRUTAL. Funny, but let's just say my income is very much affected by this community, so it's sort of like watching Auburn get roasted by the NCAA. It's funny and all, but I'm holding my breath hoping they get out of dodge before they find something to pin on Bama... mind the football analogy.
