re: The fact that we have to have a "March for Science" is frightening

Waste. Waste and excess. Pointless. Same as the inflated price tags for military stuff.
The belt needs to be tightened, plain and simple.

Have you seen the reasons for this march? None of it is science. Also, let's not get into the rejection of biology by the progressives.
The abortion argument? It's a head scratcher. It might be a human (and I don't support late term abortion). I don't really care if they abort it before meaningful brain development has started.
Harvesting stem cells from embryos isn't murder either.

If a consumer is interested in it, why couldn't that happen? Or are you admitting that something the majority of people don't value (snake research) is getting money from people (taxpayers) who value the money more than the research? That, my friend, is what we call inefficiency.

Of course. Many are terribly mismanaged. Even science agencies
It's the principle, for most people.
Also, you know, clean air and shite

That's my beef. I'm fine with legit, needed research to be funded, but it saddens me that we cannot even have a debate about whether there is some porky, sketchy fat that needs to be trimmed from these programs without being labeled "anti science!"

The principle is the government as a whole wastes fat too much money for not enough return and it needs to be pared down at all levels, and pet projects that do no real good need to be cut.

Well, they can say that, but how much of it actually goes to protecting air and water quality, and how much amounts to pointless red tape and shakedowns?

all of this on both sides shows how really ignorant and capable of brainwash the people are. we will think for you and force our views down your throats. science likely has no motive other than expanding knowledge. politics has its own motives depending on the quest for money and power. make up your own minds by actually reading. a lost art it appears on this cite by some. facts are important.

Waste, yes. Whole departments and large chunks of peer-reviewed University/College research? Not so much. But unfortunately that is happening. It's become an all or nothing approach.
It's a growing issue with the abortion debate as well. It's starting to trickle over into restricting access for birth control. If anything, we need to be handing out birth control like candy to people who pick up a welfare check.

Since when did science become the enemy? When it told us things we didn't want to hear?
Remember in the Middle Ages when the Church was the center of knowledge? Good times.
Since people like you and your ilk began politicizing it.
Take someone like me, for example.
Do I believe in global warm..I mean man made global...I mean client change? Yes, who doesn't believe the climate changes?
The problem comes in when people like you push for "solutions" to these problems with things like wealth redistribution or higher taxes.
Then, when people revolt because "solutions" like organized theft won't solve these problems, you do stupid shite like start marches and threads like this.

I absolutely agree that people who do not value the research are funding the research. That's okay.
I don't value the bulk of our military operations but I'm still forced to contribute.
Environment and the countries natural resources belong to everyone and without a meaningful socioeconomic return should never be degraded.

Make no mistake. It's been politicized across the board. Blaming one side or another at this point is being incredibly naive to the failure of our two party government in recent years.

Oh I totally agree. Abortions should be free but come with mandatory sterilization.
If we sterilized more people they wouldn't need to worry about abortions and less children would be born into poverty.

You act like these science departments nation wide are running around with massive budgets and highly overpaid staff
Just a few years ago I was working entry level for the state of TN.. and guys with 5-10 years of experience were making about 40k a year. I was making 28k
Was money mismanaged? I'm sure it has been on occasion. More taxpayer money by far was lost by constant turnover because the work is demanding, you get bitched at all day by the regulated community, and the pay was shitty.
Want more efficient government? Increase the ability to hire talent.. and stop making do with the bottom of the barrel. Then you can trim back the budget because you'll be filled to the brim with competent professionals.

Government belts nationwide were tightened after this last economic downturn.

Then eliminate racial and gender quotas and stop hiring based on political contributions.
Only the best for the best pay and be damned if there isn't enough "diversity".
That's the first step.

I mean, we don't have to. But feeling like a victim feels too good not to.
Scientists are just another group that feels persecuted, same as every other subset of the population.

It has nothing to do with any of this. Government employees are often not held accountable for their work, or lack thereof. It makes it easy and worthwhile for underperforming workers to seek out government employment.
Hiring processes being what they are doesn't help either. People that have no experience with a given position or field are the first to evaluate an application. Often times, the choices sent to the people that do have the knowledge to make the right decisions are subpar. Entire positions get thrown out and readvertised.
There is also the fact that promotion potential is poor in many jobs, and not really based on performance in others. "Oh, you've been here 5 years? Here's a promotion."
Or, supervisors get tired of dealing with poor employees, and there is no one that wants to, so they get PROMOTED!! It's the old "pass someone along so I don't have to deal with them" mentality that many of our schools are now infected with.
What all of this has to do with the state of science in this country, I have no idea.

I saw the poster. I can get behind additional sciences in school, and I can kind of get behind climate change (though I think human beings, and especially the United States are given way too much credit), but the stupid arse diversity shite they have to tack on to every fricking thing just irritates the hell out of me.
