Just got back from NYC. I've seen more culture in half a block of Greenwich Village this weekend than I've ever seen in BR
because that's a fair comparison. the world's premiere city versus baton rouge.

I've always said that someone who says there is nothing to do in BR just hasn't looked. I can normally name some pretty fun things to do that noone has ever tried, but they will say that there is nothing to do here. ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconbow.gif)

I've lived here my entire life, and never before have I felt like there's less establishment intruding on young business and entrepreneurship than now. It's a young city and for those who chose it, it can be almost anything you want it to be.

I am with you.
Would rather grow old and die here in BR. Second Choices would be tie between SD and SF.
With my top three out the way, if something compelled me to move to the following cities, I'd rank them like this.
Nashville, Columbia SC, Athens, Tuscaloosa
Then
DFW, LA, NYC, Chicago, Tie for 5th Miami/Seattle.
On topic, I liked the article. I wish she would have thrown a plug in for the Mid-City efforts(even if copied from other cities) for arts/unity/culture. Those events are fun and "outside the box" for average boozing tailgater like myself.

I don't mind BR but it kind of is.

I would agree with that for sure.

I have posted about this before. People must not take for granted that
2014 >>> 2004 >> 1994 > 1984 <<<<<< 1974.
Having grown up here, that's my little diagram to illustrate progress since the Crash.

I like it, accurate for the most part.
I'm not sure how much better 2004 was compared to 1994, though. In 1994 BR still had Bon Marche, The Broadmoore, a strong Cortana, ect

I wasn't around in the 70's but I believe it considering how many big acts came through BR back then.

I would've figured '94 was worse than '84. Wasn't north baton rouge livable in the 80's?

Yea for some the 84 vs 94 can go either way. Personally I just think in 94, there was finally some investment BACK to BR. I know it sounds trivial now but we had JUST gotten our first Outback Steakhouse, Hooters, and Ninfas(this was big deal in early 90s), and can't leave out the The Gold Club.
At the time these were establishments that 'cooler cities' had that we'd only see on vacations or business trips.
eta: But public schools had gone downhill for sure. and Color Wars and crack epidemic were coming to BR.

In my experience it was. I was dating many girls who lived off Plank Road and went to Istrouma and Redemptorist, as well as the Belaire area. By 94, or let's say 96 when I moved back to town those same places had hit the proverbial gutter. Bon Marche Mall was still ok in 84, and was where we went to the movies, and Cortana Mall was very much alive and well. Even Broadmoor Shopping Center and the theatre were doing fine.

It astounds me how little about BR some of my friends here know. The ones who went to college here or are from here. I've been here for three years and learned more about the city than most of the people who have been here for almost a decade. It's that unadventurous mindset that's inhibited BR growth until recently.

My friends from undergrad were the same way. They'd play Halo and go out to Tigerland and then bitch about the lack of nightlife or entertainment.
You can do that and be miserable anywhere....or you can go out and enjoy yourself. Baton Rouge has a lot to offer and seems to be in the early part of an upswing.

I agree with this. Sadly, I think a lot of it, honestly, has to do with the crime, traffic, and parking situation near most of these "cool" places. Most of these "cool" places have shitty parking (Mud & Water is the exception) and are in areas prone to massive traffic headaches between them and where most people live. Crime is also rampant in places adjacent to those "cool" places. People in Baton Rouge are super paranoid when it comes to the crime in their city. They hate dealing with the hastles of parking and traffic, so they stick with what's easy, accessible, safe, and comfortable. "Cool" is the opposite of "safe", "accessible", and "comfortable" because if it was, it wouldn't be "cool".
