The Battle of New Orleans was fought 210 years ago today...

On January 8, 1815, a ragtag American army made up of militia, natives, slaves, Haitians, and even pirates defeated the mighty British army in the fields and swamps outside the city of New Orleans. This victory would make famous the already celebrated General Andrew Jackson, catapulting him to the presidency a mere nine years later. The battle itself was a lopsided affair. Despite outnumbering the forces opposing them, the British got absolutely wrecked while attempting frontal assaults against prepared positions. The red coats would suffer 2,037 combined casualties within a matter of minutes (291 killed, 1,262 wounded, and 484 missing/captured). American losses would stand at just 71 (13 killed, 39 wounded, 19 missing/captured).
While known to history as the last battle of the War of 1812, the conflict itself had actually come to an end several weeks prior when diplomats signed a treaty ending the war at Ghent in modern day Belgium on Christmas Eve. News of this would not reach the Americas for several months, however.
Here's a video explaining the battle from the battlefield itself:

One of the things I didn’t know until a few years ago was that this became a federal holiday until 1861 and effectively Memorial Day replaced it.
The young country beating the British became a source of pride. Elevated Jackson to the White House.

I thought the Battle of New Orleans was being fought daily.
The Battle of New Orleans, which took place on January 8, 1815, resulted in about 13 American deaths
That's a normal Saturday

Old Hickory was a tough SOB
ETA: Notice the park ranger is a DEI hire. Come on New Orleans, get it together.

Glad we beat them once after surrender, just for good measure.

In 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip'
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans
We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin'
There wasn't as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico

Every able bodied male in new orleans had their door knocked on. Whether you were lawyer or a carpenter.

Meh, the treaty had been signed but not ratified. So officially we were still at war. And if the Brits had taken the city, they may not have given it back. They weren’t acquiescing in the validity of the Louisiana Purchase. It was a very important battle.

The vast majority of Park Rangers I've come across for years have been women. Not every woman is a DEI hire.

Always pretty cool going to the battlefield on field trips even though it was just a few blocks away from my school at OLPS.

A woman can’t be knowledgeable about the Battle of New Orleans?

This rarely gets discussed, but it wasn’t a single battle. It was a series of engagements over a couple of weeks or so. When Jackson learned where the British had landed, he marshaled his forces, marched them downriver, sent a gunboat downriver and launched a night attack against the British. It was inconclusive, but it stunned the Brits who believed the city would be lightly defended if at all.

Brits were begging for a bullet once they encountered the skeeters.

Damn the narrator butchers both Chalmette and New Orleans pronunciation in the first 10 seconds of the video.

#1 it's a national park
#2 Park Rangers have to take pretty tough tests to be there
#3 if she passed the test, why wouldn't she be a ranger? Women can't know about the Battle of New Orleans?
