Pangea is coming back and we will all die.

Smithsonian Magazine

quote:

In 250 million years, the vast majority of Earth could become inhospitable to mammals as the planet’s landmasses merge together to form the next supercontinent. At least, that’s the dire outlook of a new study published Monday in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Scientists reached this conclusion by modeling the climate with a supercomputer—and while they weren’t completely surprised by the result, they do find the predictions “a bit depressing,” says Hannah Davies, a geologist at the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences who was not involved in the study, to Nature News’ Jonathan O’Callaghan.

quote:

“There have been extinction events in the past and will be extinction events in the future,” she tells the publication. “I think life will make it through this one. It’s just kind of a grim period.”

A supercontinent is just what it sounds like: a giant landmass that forms when the planet’s continents join together because of shifting tectonic plates. The last supercontinent that existed on Earth was called Pangea, and it split up roughly 200 million years ago.

Earth’s continents are drifting now, and they could merge back together in 250 million years, scientists predict. They’ve named the next supercontinent Pangea Ultima. And according to the new model, it will be a kind of hellscape.

Have any of these (well compensated, I assume) studies ever produced an outcome that wasn’t dire? I don’t understand how a serious person could take stock in a single one of these.

can they narrow it down a little bit?
I want to make sure I don't have plans that day.

The reforming of Pangea and its negative affect on humans is actually a pretty solid certainty. How and when are the question. A lot of the climate alarmists hate this because human actions will have nothing to do with it.

If not this a solar storm will get us LINK. If not that Andromeda will eventually crash into the Milky Way LINK or the sun will supernova LINK wiping any record that any of us ever existed.

So have a drink. LINK

Nah... if we are going to make it through this one... and... well...

I'm not really sure I'd call that "grim". I'd actually file it under "Eh, who gives a big shite".

No, it is not even close to a certainty. Not even close to a certainty for mammals. In 250 million years, what will humans have evolved to? What about other mammals? Given history, seems like a new order of animals will most certainly arise.

Sorry, I did mean a certainty as to the end of humanity or such or the timing of whatever new land mass forms. I meant that some form of Pangea will reemerge as the plates are moving as we speak. You are correct is stating that no one knows even close to how we and/or the planet will evolve at that later point. Now, when our Sun supernovas or Andromeda crashes into the Milky Way, SpaceX better have been the precursor for the evolution of space travel for us to have a shot.

Jesus will come back well before then, so I won’t be here… unless…

It actually happens real fast, like the continents did in Noah’s day.

Either way, I’m good.

See, this is why I’m all for man-made climate change. If we caused it, insurance companies can’t call it an act of God.

I’ll only be 250,000,067 years old. Hope Rawhide and Wagon Train are still on.
