We are either the poorest in the neighborhood or people are buying cars way beyond their means.

Every house in my subdivision has a newish Tesla and/or Mercedes out front.

Meanwhile we are rocking a 2008 Toyota and 2013 Ford.

I like how people think really wealthy people don't have expensive cars, hiyses, yachts, etc. There certainly are examples like Warren Buffet that follow this but the vast majority of the wealthy and ultra wealthy do not follow this trend.

I assume because for them dropping 150k on an S-class isn't really noticeable.

Who cares? It’s not whatever year your parents bought their home.

Correct. When you see a lot of new cars on the road, that tells you that you live around a lot of people who make very bad financial decisions.

I'd say the most popular vehicle in my neighborhood is the Mercedes GLE. Mostly retirees in our hood that own their homes, paid cash ,the neighborhood is only about 15 years old and only has really grown in the past 7-8.

Nah dude lamborghini sold out of the entire revuelto model run before production began because all the financially illiterate poor people bought them up.

It certainly wasn’t the rich and wealthy buying the 700k+ car

An old acquaintance from my racing days worked for his dad's plastic packaging company. About 5 years ago they sold out for over a billion and immediately bought about $20 million worth of hypercars and started a you tube collection lol.

Everyone in my neighborhood mostly has these new blacked out Escalades or Denalis that are 1-2 years old based on the new grill. I"m either the poorest or not living maxed out to the gills in car notes with my wittle ole Honda Passport.

Just saw a mid-90's Dodge pickup at lunch which was pretty cool. Still going strong. Other that that old vehicle, everything else was late model.

This! I buy olderish (6-10 years old) for cash and invest as if I have a note for a brand new one. It has done very well that way.

Neither am I. At the end of the day, both of us are using anecdotes, but what's not antecdotal is the actual numbers

You realize the actual numbers show that people are keeping cars WAY longer these days then ever before, right?

The average vehicle on the road today is nearly 13 years old. People bought cars much more frequently in the past vs today.

I drive a 94 F150 with 700 horses under the hood, that is more reliable and more durable than any new truck on the road.

These days the smart folks drive older cars or keep what they have and will drive it into the ground. Only a fool will pay today’s prices.

why do people need to cope like this?

Most of what I am seeing is being driven into the ground because the owners can’t afford anything else.

Interesting. So you know most people on the road driving and their financial status? Or most people yell out the window and tell you they are broke? Or what?

If you drive around MCG, the only older toyotas/Lexus you see are 2000s Landcruisers and LX470/570s

Which for reference MSRP'd for over 110k in 2025 dollars. I guess all those 8 and 9 figure net worth households missed the memo on driving an old Taco or camry.
