These days the smart folks drive older cars or keep what they have and will drive it into the ground.
Most of what I am seeing is being driven into the ground because the owners can’t afford anything else.

I was looking at new/used tricks today and the used prices are completely absurd.
Adjusted for inflation, not really.
Do some research on what an optional tape deck cost in an old vehicle adjusted to 2025 dollars.

A 1970’s LR isn’t the same as a 2002 Yukon with a leaking exhaust that the owner can’t afford to fix.

Good on ya. Most of the people in my area appear to be driving 20 year old beaters because they can’t afford anything else. It isn’t a choice.

After this year, all mechanics shops are going to have to pay a fee to access the Dealers OBD codes for 2026/2027 Vehicles.
Dodge, Ford, Chevy, MB, Toyota, etc.
I dont see Used auto prices going down at all. If anything they are going up.
Its going to get even crazier.
The local shop I visit charges 120/hr and hes the cheapest in town.
I drive a 20 year old beater truck.
It has an Ashtrey and Its cheap enough to fix and most people can work on it.
Life is Constant Changings

Have you ever adjusted today’s prices for inflation and compared to earlier years?

Vale, Co is ate up with 70's and 80's rigs....fully restored of course.
A lot of those are HHH, North American Overland, etc and cost as much or more than a new G Class. I am partial to the East Coast Defender versions but they tend to put Chevy crate motors in. Nothing like a 90's era Defender or a 60's era Series LR with a 650hp LT4.

Yep paid cash for a 2023 Outback, not popular with people on here, but the AWD and the capacity for it to hold cargo with a topper served me well on a two month road trip, hiking, and camping out west. No apologies given.

that is so good. It would be even funnier if the x axis was “IQ” instead of “net worth”
Should I post the pics of Elon Musk with his Mclaren F1 or Sam Altman with his Koenigsegg?

Lol, no. Have a 08 Tacoma and 2011 Tahoe. Never an issue with either. I do all the maintenance myself so I know it's done right. Oldest vehicle has 155k on it, Tahoe 140k. Garage kept. Great shape. When it's time, I'll drop a new engine in and call it a day. 10K vs 50 - 100K? No brainer.

You have captured the issue very well. I like my 13 year old analogue truck much more than the new Chrysler that demands bluetooth updating every couple of months. I brought the Chrysler in to dealer one time and got hit with a 500 dollar computer update charge.
I think it would be perfect if Tesla got the urge to produce an analogue vehicle. I would be okey with the ignition/fuel control to be a compact digital device. Can you imagine roll up windows, a manual emergency brake and transistor radio.

lol. Economic Status. Yea. It’s an absolute sign of prosperity to be paying a 90 thousand dollar vehicle off monthly for 7 or 8 years at 7, 10, or so percent interest while someone else has zero payments and DGAS what other people think. Or worse, they are leasing the vehicles.
And then when they have to have the newer vehicle to look richer than their neighbors… they roll negative equity into a new loan.
People in the US owe over 1 and a half trillion dollars, right now, on vehicle loans. If they were so prosperous… they would cut a check for it. Right?
And there are actually people that see these people in a new F250, Suburban, Yukon Denali, and think they are doing awesome. When they are actually struggling mightily to look well off.

Oh good grief.
I’m not making this observation (for my area) in a vacuum. I see the people driving most of this stuff and they aren’t headed to see financial advisors.
