I know many of you dyed-in-the-wool SUNO fans hate it when I bring up this topic. I'm just amazed that it has taken this long for the Advocate to write an article about it.

People in NE Louisiana: Please defend the facts in this article. Please defend having three 4-year schools with separate administrations and duplicative programs within a 30 miles radius. I'll hang up and listen.

Can't you just bump one of the 5,000 threads you've started about closing schools?

The Physics program at LA Tech and the Engineering graduate program at SU are untouchable.

I started a thread on this yesterday.

Louisiana Tech is the only other Tier One school in the state next to LSU.

LSU offers a state A&M school, and Tech offers a STEM school.

Close LSUS, Grambling, and ULM. Any unique programs they offer, bring to Ruston.

La Tech and ULM don't really need to exist separately. SUNO is an abortion, Grambling isn't really necessary. Lake Charles probably doesn't need a university either with Lafayette being so close.

Not sure what to think about Southeastern, Nicholls and Northwestern.

I think everyone realizes that there is an issue. Unfortunately, when you talk about closing schools, any alum / family member of alum / native of the town of the university will defend it to the death. I would be more than happy to see my alma mater closed, but I don't think closing a liberal arts college with an enrollment of barely 1,000 would help much.

When you look at the demographics of the state and the quickly deteriorating economic conditions of Baton Rouge, closing LSU makes far and away the most sense. It's the biggest expenditure on the higher ed budget. Shut down one campus and save the rest of the system. Simple as that.

Would you have the pharmacy school at Tech or only have the one at Xavier?

You'd probably need to keep ULM's pharmacy school in tact somehow since Xavier is private.

Close the school in Lafayette. They bring nothing to the table, and with a higher quality school nearby in lake Charles, it would not be missed.

One program doesn't make the school necessary. It can be absorbed by another university.

Would we really be discussing this if our retarded state constitution allowed for budget cuts from more areas?
