I still think about it but mostly it's the fond memories that stick out. Housing a bunch of people at our place in BR, finally hearing from my mom who had to stay at the hospital she worked at at the time, crashing in the FEMA trailer when I'd come visit to party with friends, working on the house with mom, step dad, and the handyman they hired (we cut up quite a bit and I learned a lot.)

The bad has faded, and especially since my mom passed.

I don’t know if gaunt is the right word

There are plenty of places that have been vacant for 20 years.

I made peace that Louisiana will never change. After the storm, we were given a blank check to fix all the wrongs. We had some of the world's brightest minds converge on the area with an unlimited budget, and we still fricked it up. Once I made peace with that, I packed up and left. I have fun going back and visiting, but after a few days I remember why I left.

Do they disintegrate or something? I didn’t know they had an expiration date.

Not to sound like a dick but if a blue tarp roof was meant to last 20+ years don’t you think everyone would have blue tarp roofs?

It would be much cheaper.

shite my neighbors blue tarps lasted maybe 1-2 years after Ida.

I was one of the first to the 9th ward and chalmette area working for Fema. The things I witnessed still upset me today.

Katrina made me a take a bit harder look at who the people of the state elected, over and over again. Babblin Blanco, the Landrieu family, etc.I realized the state was a lost cause.

Every late-Aug. or early-Sept. while watching shite ramp up in the tropics, I've gotten anxiety, like "Is this the year I'm gonna go 9 days without electricity/AC...or will this be another one like Katrina where I went 21 days straight w/o power?"

What are the real numbers on this? How many N.O. People remained in BR 5 years later? BR seemed on its way down to me pre-Katrina.

Best story I have was from a friend that was a cop at the time in Houston. He was working the astrodome and had to arrest a teenager for shooting/killing another teenager.

My buddy was in shock at how brazen this kid was during the process. The kid said something to the effect of “I’ll only do 6 months. That’s how it works in Louisiana.”

Too which my friend replied with “Hah well we aren’t in Louisiana, buddy. We take murders serious here in Texas.”

It was like God himself shined a big light on all the cockroaches/dysfunction in Louisiana. “How/Why do people live there?”

List the wrongs and how they'd be fixed.

Who? What unlimited budget?

I think the population went from just over 400k to over 600k which remained and let’s say it was not New Orleans finest that found BR.

I stayed and remember listening to WWL and people calling after the storm passed late on Sunday saying the water is rising up in the street and the news guy was just asking questions because the storm had passed they didn't alert people or news about the levee failures.
