The 1950s and 60s were the pinnacle of American power/society

Yes, there were problems. Racial issues were festering and about to explode, nuclear war hung over everyone's heads and Vietnam was gearing up, BUT

USA was the unrivaled economic power on the planet. Americans standards of living were great. Cities were flourishing (interstates and malls had not spurred the flight to the suburbs).

We hit another solid peak in the mid/late 80s, though.

I'd say it was the ruining of public education that spurred the flight to the suburbs.
Plus that and affordable automobiles.

The decline began during the Clinton presidency and the introduction of the information super-highway.

Agreed. Late 40's-early 50's were the golden ages.

One of my favorite depictions:

When you have segments of society (women and minorities) forced to be below others, it works better for a economic engine

Doesn’t make it right, but that’s just how it is.

The 1950’s was a great decade if you were white and middle class.

Not sure the 60’s can be lauded as a pinnacle of American society when a president was assassinated, a presidential candidate was assassinated, a civil rights icon was assassinated, and it saw multiple riots. It was a very turbulent decade.

And our economic power was partially due to much of Europe’s manufacturing capacity being decimated by WW2.

It wasn’t sustainable as Europe was rubble after the war. Once they rebuilt they were always going to start cutting into our postwar market share.

I agree with this. I can't really articulate all the reasons why well but the mid to late 80's were the last time it seemed like the nation was on solid footing and heading in a good direction. Since then we've gotten way off track and I don't think it's coming back

That peak was really the 90’s

Our biggest problem was whether or not Marilyn Manson and video games were warping kids brains

Weren't the 60s one of the most volatile decades in American history? Certainly in modern American history since the Civil War.

I agree with you on the 50s though. That was peak America.

Considering the percentage of two parent households for the black community was around 90% then compared to less than 40% today I have to conclude it wasn't all bad for them

Check every measurable statistic, from crime to unwed pregnancies to divorce rates to graduation rates and then get back to me.

In large parts of the country they were still locked out of the full education and economic opportunities afforded to white citizens. The tide was shifting but wasn’t there yet.

And a natural, versus forced, shift would have been better for all parties.

Few things forced on society end up working for the good of that society, even if well-intentioned.
