I mean it was an underlying reason but only insofar as the southern states made it perfectly clear they never would have joined a union of states where they could not control what happened within their state borders. The congress was shifting due to new states being added and would have outlawed the practice, taking away what the southern states thought was a right of self governance.

Poof

War.

While slavery was the number one contributing factor and the straw that broke the camels back, per say, all of those are things are true and relevant. Why can't we just teach the facts?

Slavery was the main cause of the Civil War. That's true.

What's also true is that in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, the Federal Government has forgotten what the hell the 10th Amendment is, exploded in its size and cost, and have used courts to justify ridiculous intrusions in Americans' lives.
Let's also teach that.

While it was about states rights, it was the main issue. Do you think there would have been a civil war if slavery didn't exist?

The one and only cause of the Civil War was dumb arse politicians that were so partisan they would rather see 700,000 people die and half the country left in ruins due to thier arrogance.
The same bullshite we see going on today.
If these idiots had acted in a truly nonpartisan manner with the countries best interest at heart the war could have been prevented and slavery phased out.
I wonder if these text books mention that the Democrats were the pro slavery party?

All one needs to do is read the Southern legislatures' statements of secession to know that defending the institution of slavery was the main reason they seceded. Simply put: No slavery = No American Civil War. All those who insist that slavery had little or nothing to do with the American Civil War are simply lying through their collective teeth.

Southern traitors wanting to protect their precious right to enslave people is more like it. No secession = no American Civil War.

I wish I could name the guy, but after a few years of war and deprivation and propaganda that the war wasn't about slavery, some southern politician is supposed to have said, "If we're not fighting for the damn n****rs, I'd like to know what the hell we are fighting for."
