I didn't even know this was a thing. I've never had to get an inspection in Alabama.

Did away with them in Georgia in the 70's and there wasn't a surge in unsafe vehicles. I know Texas was as corrupt as Georgia was...it did not make a difference if your vehicle was a death trap someone would slap the sticker on it for a $20 bill....

I’m not a huge fan of the sticker nonsense in LA.
However, with the large number of uninsured drivers in LA it’s another mechanism to complicate their lives and force compliance.
Just like you have to show proof of insurance to do any transaction at DMV or tag agencies.

Vehicle inspection no longer required for Texas drivers
I agree with this at least in theory. It's already a violation to drive with a broken tail light. Making me get a sticker that says my tail light aint broken seems redundant.

just think it defies logic,” said Larry Harris, owner of Larry’s Auto Inspection in Houston. “If nobody is making sure the vehicles are unsafe, there’s going to be some unsafe vehicles on the street.”
The lack of inspection sticker means you the driver gets a ticket which they don’t pay. The unsafe car is on the street either way, but at least now citizens can get an hour of their life and $20 back a year

I've spent hundreds getting check engine light fixed so I could get an annual sticker. Vehicle runs perfect but light keeps coming on even after repairs.
Changed oxygen sensors more than once but keeps coming back to the same issue.
You could have disconnected your battery right before inspection. The check engine light will take a while before it returns.

But it doesn’t work in reality.
They get insurance for a month and then let it lapsed or they show a forged insurance doc.
And they just get black market inspection stickers or they get a ticket and don’t pay it and don’t care because they already have other outstanding tickets/bench warrants but in 2023 the cops don’t even bother with it. And they know it.

You can't register your vehicle in Texas without the inspection, if you live in certain counties.
Loophole: when renewing your registration online, indicate that your car is currently in another state. The site makes you promise to have the vehicle inspected once it returns to Texas, but otherwise allows you to complete the purchase. You never have to keep your promise.

Doesnt it depend on what County you're in?
Yeah, Williamson and Travis arent those counties....lol

BR Police have a hard on for that shite.
It's ridiculous. They were always set up near campus when I was in school looking for college kids to pull over for an expired inspection sticker.
It's a money grab.

Second time in recent months I saw a guy offering to sell blank inspection stickers. Had my kid with me the second time. Otherwise, I wanted to engage him and ask what he was charging.
* I should be clear: I saw a dude selling them a few months ago but he didn’t approach my work truck. The second time I was in plainclothes and driving my personal. In a Mexican grocery parking lot in BR. La Morenita, I think? I mean if you’re in the market for that sort of thing.

What Larry is really saying is that I can't gouge owners on windshield wiper blades, charge them extra for hooking up the car to a computer to read an O2 sensor, or any other BS to get a little extra.

Probably not the LSP. The only use they have is to rake in money for the state harassing folks on inspection stickers and speeding. Who else sits at interstate entrance and exit ramps looking for stickers? They do. But I bet they aren’t pulling over paper Texas license plates and battle trap cars to check for insurance.

Mine expires this month in Montgomery and I just tried to do it online and it told me I needed an inspection.
So what does this help exactly? A large number of people don't have their vehicles registered and can now skip inspections too?

Stop living off government mandates, Larry.

You think people who aren't registering their vehicles are actively having said vehicle inspected? The lack of inspection is likely the reason the vehicle isn't registered in the first place. It's a package deal in many parts of Texas.

They have been doing this in Texas for years

Freakin Virginia...one of the 13. They bring up abolishing this once in and a while but I guess the auto repair lobby prevails.
HOWEVER, when the goofy Dems controlled things a few years ago they passed a law that said you can be three months late on your sticker, as "low income" people can't always affort to fix their car.
Well, guess what: I've discovered that most jurisdictions and the staties no longer pull you over for an old sticker. I have a Feb sticker on my Wrangler, drove by two troopers this past weekend and the county sheriff. No issues.
But they need to abolish inspection stickers here. And the ABC while they are at it.

No obviously not. I guess it doesn't change anything in Montgomery then
