Texas mom issued an arrest warrant for her kids' overdue library books

Navasota TX is tackling real crime
quote:
Morgan said the books were between a few weeks to a month late when her husband dropped them off, except for one that did not fit in the library's drop box. Her stepson later dropped the book off inside the library, she said.
NBC affiliate KPRC of Houston obtained a copy of the overdue notice from the library that showed Morgan had two books due on March 31, 2023. The notice, dated April 10, 2023, said she owed a fee of $1.
A week later, the library sent what it said was a second and final notice. It said Morgan had 10 days to return the books and pay a new $2 fine or the matter would be turned over to the court.
Morgan said she did not receive the library's late notices because they were sent to an old address which the news team confirmed was true. The library never called her about the late books, she said.

Library needs those late fees so they can schedule the next drag queen story time

A city ordinance states that failure to return books or library items within 30 days from the due date results in their library card being suspended. If a person fails to respond to the letter of complaint within 10 days of receiving it, it is considered a misdemeanor criminal offense punishable by a fine of up to $500.
My library getting rid of late fees has been a great thing. Basically, you get a few weeks past the return date to return it, then you get hit with the price of the entire book. It's a better system.

This is a crime they can really enforce because it won't "disproportionately affect Black people", like reporting babies that are born with drugs in their system

Because the library sent the overdue fines notices to her old house, nor did they call her to let her know she owed money.

It’s not the libraries job to call every scofflaw that doesn’t return books. And why didn’t she update her address with the library when she moved?
Y’all just think this is an innocent crime, but not return books to the library and then selling them on the black market is big business.

I still have a DeSoto Parish library card after moving to West Funroe in 2019. Still own land there though.

quote:Not the first overdue notice according to the link you posted.
Because the library sent the overdue fines notices to her old house,
But you bring up a good question, she knew she had returned the books late which resulted in a late fee. Then she moved so why not update her address with the library?
People need to take responsibility for their actions and stop blaming others for their own failings.
ETA: I hope she goes to jail for 30 days. Maybe she'll learn something from that. Plus, word will get around...

Because you aren’t being nickel and dimed for forgetting. But I’m guessing you’re perfect.

Perfection is necessary to bring a library book back on time? Lol

Can you not tell it was sarcasm? Or do you think there is really a black market for stolen library books. I’m sure that they would be making dozens of dollars.
