Texas Insurance Stat

Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the United States, with 16.7% of its population—about 5.1 to 5.2 million residents—lacking health insurance.
I saw this scrolling through on a social media site. Found it interesting for a state with so much opportunity, that almost 20% of the population is a medical emergency away from bankruptcy.

I don’t think this means what you think it means

Maybe if health insurance was affordable more people would buy it.
But having it is even becoming a scam with high deductibles, pre authorization runaround, and denying coverage.
I think some people get stuck in a gap where healthcare insurance is higher than your mortgage payment, even with subsidies.
People would rather have roof over their heads than pay some company more than thousand bucks a month for insurance they may not even use once in a month and still have to pay out of pocket.

Move this to poli.
frick 'em. Illegals, mostly. Georgia, California, New York, etc. all let illegals enroll in various schemes to get them "insurance" at the cost of the taxpayer, which is why they're counted as "insured."

One of the biggest drivers of New York’s Medicaid enrollment growth over the past decade has been “emergency Medicaid” for undocumented immigrants, newly released state records show.
The program – which is limited to short-term care for emergency conditions – has soared by 440,000 or more than 1,200 percent since 2014

In Texas and many I know that are under 35 don’t see the need to pay the premiums. They get cash pay discounts for basic care they need/want. The same goes for their dental, cash prices are much cheaper vs paying monthly premiums.
Oh and they have savings so a “medical emergency” won’t bankrupt them.

I have to pay about $30k a year between premiums and my deductible to get any benefit from health insurance. That’s $2k a month for the premium and a $6,500 deductible (per person). It is a fricking scam for sure.

This is the same people who fill up the emergency rooms bc they use the ER as their urgent care or primary doctor. Don’t worry, we’re all paying for them.

If I paid that much I would check with local hospitals & see what kind of financial assistance policy they offer. Where I work, there is a tiered (based on income) "catastrophic expense" category where the hospital hands you a flat $10-25k bill no matter how much higher the expenses are.
It's not cheap, but it's better than some of these 500k-1M bills an ICU visit can cause.

You have a shitty plan. I have a $3k deductible per person for less. You'd be better off moving to a high deductible plan and funding an MSA that never expires.

I wonder if that is what “insurance” or Medicare actually pays out in those claims after all the contract negotiated rates and still expect you to meet your deductible or Max Out of pocket nearly the same amount.
So the hospital gets a double dip of insurance proceeds, and they get other 10k or more from you in deductibles.
But if you avoid going the insurance route, we can just bill you a flat 10-15k.

I pray I don’t have to go to the hospital though.

Daddy government won't let that happen.
