Spinoff of that Bloomberg thread. Texas is the South until you get west of San Antonio. Florida is the South until you go south of Orlando. West Texas and South Florida are their own thing, but to say that Texas and Florida aren't the South is just silly. They have every characteristic of the South.

New Orleans is culturally very different from Atlanta and Charlotte. So is Lafayette. But, its all "the South." Therefore, if New Orleans is The South, I'll include Miami and South Florida in too. Why not? What would make it not "the South"?

I'd include Oklahoma and Kentucky too - should be The South.

But, its really silly to say Texas and Florida aren't "the South," as thought "the South" is just one thing. It's diverse and have many variations.

Missouri isn't the South.

My Mama used to extend it to Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She'd say anything north of Hattiesburg is "the North" and you can't trust people from up there.

“The South” merely refers to the bottom of the barrel of states that produce alarming headlines that make you feel like it’s the 60’s. Texas doesn’t count because it’s not as trashy. Most of Florida is trash so they are in.

Alabama
Louisiana
Mississippi
Georgia
Tennessee
South Carolina
Florida

If you have an SEC school in your state, you are in the south.

It would be the population. South FL is culturally fed by droves of transplants from the Midwest (Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana), and NY, NJ, VT, PA, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, Haiti, Central America, Canada, Eastern Europe, the U.K. It is rare to hear a Southern accent or to find any generations-deep native Floridians in SoFL. The real cultural South in FL is found inland or up in the Panhandle.

It’s silly to say parts of Florida and Texas are the south but not parts of Missouri.

At a bare minimum, Missouri’s bootheel is comfortably in the south. It’s 50 miles from Mississippi for crying out loud.

I’d say until you go south of Lake City. Maybe Gainesville. I lived in southern Illinois and it was a lot more “southern” than anywhere I’ve lived in Central Florida.
