re: Texas A&M: A warning to petroleum engineering students

Do you people really think geoscientists only work in O&G?
My god. There are thousands of jobs throughout the country for geoscientists. I look at them weekly. Hell one could go make 80k/yr for the city of New York as a geoscientist, and they have multiple positions available. One could also go be a volcanologist in Hawaii for 72k/yr and they also have multiple slots to fill as well.
Point is, comparing the difference between Geoscientists and PETEs job outlook if the petroleum industry tanks is foolish.

Bingo
Know a geologist who is a multi multi millionaire doing mainly groundwater contamination stuff

Lol. This is very dumb.

You guys win. The job market for geologists is insulated from ups and down in the O&G industry.

Welcome to geologists now.

TigerHam85 is right. Mobility is better for geoscience.

False. Geologists are not the first to get let go. When prices go down the industry is forced to drill smarter, lower risk wells. Geologists are the driving force behind that approach. Middle management will get trimmed back before solid geologists and engineers.

Doesnt really happen. Tight sands and shale get fracked. Not tar sands.

I was always told that the marketing department was first to go.

Depends on the structure of the company

Agreed that if you are an established geologist you should be able to survive in down time. Also true that geologists aren't pigeon holed into oil & gas and have other options. However there is no way to disguise the fact that in times of a shitty oil industry, there will be less geologists entering the work force.

they should do a similar warning for law students.

That just sounds made up.

Yes, how will a recent grad survive on the meager salary of $100k?

Does anyone know much about Tulane's energy management program? I was just looking into applying there for grad school, but now I am a little nervous. I am also curious about its value, considering the program is only a few years old. I just know one student who went from UT at TU for it, and he got a nice job in Houston.
I just want to get into the industry and don't have much experience. i just noticed the class overview, and the GMAT was surprisingly average (603 average) and the GPA was a 3.17

I was told by a couple O&G execs (friends) that its an aging workforce and tons of older guys are retiring in next 0-10 years.

There are only so many true PETE jobs out there with operators. But, there is a ton of experience across the spectrum of "oilfield jobs" that is being lost due to retirement. They are hiring engineering degrees to replace them even though it's not a traditional engineering role. I took the place of a guy with 20 years of field experience. They hired him because he had experience. They hired me because of the engineering degree. Still make good money.
And as to the 500k salary, I doubt three levels of management above me clears that. Maybe sniffs it with stock and bonuses. But that's a big maybe. I'm shooting for 150k at 7 years. 250 at 15 years. That's my goal for my base salary.

EE's are the same. The power concentration especially. That's why I've focused on that area: bit of a lower starting pay than computer/communications, but much better job security and tons of chances for promotions over the next 10 years once the baby boomers pretty much HAVE to retire.

A lot of professions have that "it" job boom, which attracts a lot of people causing the profession to become oversaturated. In medicine, it was nurse anesthetist a few years ago. If you become a nurse anesthetist in this area now, you will have to move to get a job.
