SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Tesla is getting back into the California lane. The electric car maker made a big announcement Wednesday.
"We're excited to announce that Tesla's Global Engineering Headquarters will be right here, the former headquarters of Hewlett Packard," Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, said during a press conference with Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Musk said there's something poetic about bridging the past of Silicon Valley, Hewlett Packard, also known as HP, with the future. It's a move that's being celebrated by Newsom.
"I couldn't be more proud of California's commitment to support Tesla over the course of the last few decades, demonstrable in terms of policy, in terms of direction or broadly an interesting regulation, dare I say," the Governor said.
According to Newsom, California's regulatory framework gave Tesla the roadway to develop into the nation's EV leader, something Musk might disagree with, but the two did take a moment to reminisce in the rearview.
"I think you were one of the first people to buy in Tesla Roadster back in the day," Musk said to Newsom, to which the Governor replied, "I appreciate you saying that. I told him he had my money for a long while."
The decision to move the headquarters back to Silicon Valley comes a year and a half after Tesla moved its headquarters to Austin, Texas.

Elon is probably moving the smart people out of Texas to ensure that his home state doesn't go 'woke'. Clever move IMO.

Steve Jobs bought that property from HP. That has to be some of the most expensive commercial real estate in the world.

That's easy - he will get more money from the state of CA than he would from TX.

So they are shutting down the Austin facility? Or just moving management back?

This is the engineering dept. Corporate HQ will still be in TX.
