Sounds like a lot of work. Not worth it
This is what I've concluded. The rental, price per mile, and fuel cost just seems to not be worth it unless one were to drive a car or fly to an area near where they wanted to be.
I may buy one when I'm older, but the rental idea for now has been put on the back burner.

Rented one for a two week trip. The plan was to be in Moab, Utah when I turned 40. We were trying to do a Western National Park tour. Made it to Moab but never made it to Yellowstone (our last planned stop).
I drove the RV back from Durango, Co to Lake Charles non-stop (except for gas), because I didn't want anything else to happen to the RV before my family was back safe in Louisiana.
I can't even remember everything that broke on the RV. All in all the final bill was $6k over the price of the rental and mileage. Read your contract!

If you are not able to buy one you should not consider a trip like this anyway.........

I've done this a few times (but not from BR) so here are some notes:
1). Its not camping. I don't say that to be some kind of hard arse, but to point out that with a little thought and planning you can be just as comfortable in an RV as a cabin and often more so than a hotel since you'll have a full kitchen, plenty of storage, warm/cool, etc.
2) I have no idea where these crazy prices are coming from. Granted I have only rented travel trailers that I pulled with my truck and not a class C/A type rig so I was not getting charged mileage. That may be the difference. We just rented for 2 weeks over Christmas and towed about 2500 miles and I think it was around $1200.
3) You need to be at least a little bit handy or open to learning because there is always something breaking/freezing/needing attention on these things. Usually nothing crazy, but they do need some TLC and if you're not paying attention something minor can turn not minor.
4) if you have kids and plan to spend any significant time inside the trailer get something with bunks for the kids and a slide for a little more room
5) Overall I prefer to camp, but they are a good option for long trips in very cold or hot temps.

We did it for the Rose Bowl last year. But we're OT ballers....so we all flew into Vegas, rented a big arse one with 2 slide outs, and hired a driver to drive us from LV to Pasadena. We flew her home and then back out when it was time to head back to Las Vegas. About a 5 hour trip was perfect. Anything longer would've been too much. Even with the large RV, shorter drive, and professional driver, we were ready to get out of it after 4 nights.
It was fricking awesome being in the park right next to the Rose Bowl, though. We were there before everyone else for the most part and never had to deal with traffic or any of the other BS getting to or away from the stadium.

It’s expensive bc if you take a $125,000 rv with a rental life of 4 years, you have to clear over 2600 per month to pay for the unit, not including maintenance, repairs, insurance, etc.

We did this, minus the RV rental. We got an Airbnb in Kanab and hit Zion, North Rim and Bryce Canyon. Most fun I've had on a vacation in years.
