re: Tell me about Midland-Odessa, TX

Midland/Odessa is flat, hot, windy and dry. Sometimes windy and cold. There is no scenery worth looking at. Real estate is still overpriced. When I have to go there for work, Im ready to leave before I get there. There really is not anywhere close that is any different.

Can I get a nice house with some land for a decent price nearby and just hideaway there with the family for a few years? It'd only be temporary (if it happens).
Yes, but it's not cheap to live there.
Hotels, when I used to travel there, held rate fairly strongly. And we're not talking 5 * resorts.
Hourly workers in the restaurant industry were making $15.00 an hour, easily. It was very difficult to find and keep good employees.
Best restaurant there is Cork & Pig Tavern.
That's all I got.

This. 100 x.
Of all the places that I traveled, Midland/Odessa was the worst.

You can hang with Boobie Miles (no relation to Les) except he refuses to see those doctors in Mitlan (claims they just want him not to play, and that his knee is just fine)

You can join the Bandidos.
Solid networking there.

Once was a tv series filmed there called Black Gold. It was based on some roughnecks on a oil rig. I hate they canceled it.

Midland Texas - where men are men and the sheep are nervous !

Its aptly named since it is in the middle of fricking nowhere. Nothing to do but watch Minor League Baseball, sweat your balls off, and go to Twin Peaks if you're in Odessa.
Midland is where the oil field executives live during the week days, while Odessa is where the trashy oil field trash lives.
I'm really struggling to come up with a pro for either of them. There really is nothing to do, and the bars are all trashy as hell on top of that. Get ready for a serious case of the blue balls if you're not married though, since any hot person in their 20s lives in East Texas.
Midland doesn't really do meth, that's more Odessa's thing, but it's shockingly expensive to live there. I was offered the full time gig when I was floating there, and the piece of shite apartments were like $1400 a month for a one bedroom. I now live in the heart of Dallas, and I still don't pay that much for rent.

If I have to move to Midland for work, should I off myself, or is there a way to make the most of it? If so...how? What hobbies do I need to pick up (besides meth)?

I will say that was a decent establishment. That's really it though.

It's tied with McAllen for me, both for completely different reasons. McAllen at least has South Padre an hour away, which makes it at least remotely tolerable.

Booby Miles still lives there

I'd like to see the Odessa meteor crater, but only if I'm ever passing through.

If you have a family and it's temporary and would be big for advancing your career, it's not that bad. It fricking sucks if you're young and single. If you have kids who will be in school definitely live in Midland for the schools over Odessa. I have no idea what real estate prices are like there now but it was extremely expensive during the boom. It's the desert so it's windy and dry and not pretty. It gets cold by TX standards in the winter also.
The one thing I will say in it's defense is the people are very nice

Do not park your vehicle on the side of the street as there are no ditches in town so when a rainstorm comes through, the sides of the streets become the drainage ditches
If you are there to work in oil/gas, visit Twin Peaks in Odessa as the women you work with in the day, end up working at Twin Peaks in the evening

Pretty spot on.
At the end of the day if is a pathway to advancement it is doable for sure. I probably wouldn't buy unless it is a fire sale though. Prices are still inflated and if the oil industry doesn't rebound during his time there he would lose value.

I think its only in Odessa. But lets face it, if we're both talking about Twin Peaks being a highlight of the area, it definitively sucks.

You are correct, not even sure why I typed Midland, I was there two weeks ago. Good catch...thanks
Posted on 4/25/16 at 7:01 pm to RockyMtnTigerWDE
Yeah if it's only a couple years I wouldn't even consider buying right now
I did have to go out there for work again a couple months ago and flight prices there from Houston had gone down significantly, so there's that for getting out of town. It was crazy expensive to fly in/out there when activity was high
